TfL fine for travelling without a Zip (Oyster) card
By: Leaf Date: February 28, 2026, 5:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
My daughter received a fine for being on a London bus without
her student zip card - it was left behind because it was in her
coat pocket, and she left her coat at school while going out
briefly with her friend. She appealed but the appeal was
rejected. Is there anything else I can do?

If you've lost the appeal what do you think you can do?

I don't know...my daughter wrote in without telling me. Is there
a way to appeal again?

What grounds would you have to appeal?

I don't know. It was an honest mistake (she had six foot left it
in her coat pocket in school). That was already explained though
in her first appeal.

You could try posting on rail forums sub
See
HTML https://www.railforums.co.uk/forums/disputes-prosecutions.152/
that said, from my casual browsing on the forum in the past it
seems to me TFL are very litigious (more so than the overground
train operators) and if you can get away with a fine rather than
a prosecution which is what they usually go for then grab it
with both hands and pay up pronto.

with respect it's no good putting it on a rail forum, the
daughter was travelling on a bus. As someone who has driven
buses for far too many years, I have some sympathy for your
daughter, but fare evasion, and that includes not being able to
show a valid free pass, is endemic on London buses. Presumably
she was caught by a revenue inspector on the bus? They've heard
every possible excuse so many times, excuses tht have been
around since the days of the introduction of horse buses by
George Shillibeer in the 1830s. They just don't wash, I'm sorry
to say.Was she given the opportuity to pay a are to the drier by
contactless card? that is sometimes allowed.
But as others have said, TfL is very unfeeling for the likes of
people who make a genuine mistake.

Thanks for your response. I have paid the fine. She actually was
not given the opportunity to pay for her fare. In fact, the
driver reported her to the inspector. The inspector was quite
rude as well. Oh well.
