Out in the Forest
By: altrnteuniverse Date: March 11, 2020, 12:58 pm

Reo's eyes flickered open. He was laying on his back in a small
field of grass, his black hair whipping his face in the slight
breeze. He sat up with a groan; he was ridiculously sore from
his fights the day before. It's always an adventure around this
forest.
"God damnit," he muttered, his voice slightly raspy, "where's my
prize?" He dug into his pockets, one by one, until finally he
pulled out a small, shimmering gem, with flakes of blood smeared
across it. It was laced into the forehead of the monster he had
slain the day before, and it had left it behind after the fight.
Reo assumed it would be able to be sold for a decent price in a
neighboring town.
At least it'll sell for enough to feed dad and I tonight, he
thought to himself. His father, the only person he truly cared
about in this world. They were currently pretty low on funds, so
going out into the monster-infested forest was the only way to
make any money nowadays, at least for Reo. He didn't have many
skills besides fighting, anyhow. Reo stood up with a sigh.
Suddenly, he heard a rustle in the trees nearby. His hands
flicked to his two shortswords tucked into their sheathes.
I thought I was the only one coming to the forest from my town
this week? Could be another monster. Have to be careful.

Hibi winced as her foot snapped a twig beneath her feet. How
could she be so careless? Wasn't that blasted potion supposed to
enhance her stealth? She glowered, leery eyes focused ahead. The
owner of the raspy, swearing voice seemed to be on the other
side of the treeline. At least it's probably not a monster, she
thought. Even if a monster knew the mother tongue, they wouldn't
be so careless with their words.
Hibi considered calling out to the voice, but something made her
hesitate. She noticed the sounds of the forest were absent. No
animal chatter, no life, no anything. She cautiously slowed her
pace and continued forward, this time closely watching her step.

His nostrils flared. No deteriorating or disgusting scent of any
normal monsters nearby. His breathing steadied, his hands still
at his swords. He was dressed in a black tee with some small
tears in it, along with his dark brown baggy pants (easy for
movement). His red eyes glanced in the direction that the sound
came from. His teeth glistening as he grinned, his sharpened
incisors more than visible; he was excited for another fight.
"Who goes there?" he called out, as if boasting his own pride,
"Come out, come out! I won't hurt you...I promise." His grin
widened.

Hibi's grip tightened on her rapier. "I've heard thatone
before," she said, with a certain cautious aggression. "State
your name," she demanded.

He gave out a hearty laugh. A female's voice, huh? Who knows,
maybe she'll be hot.
"Reo," he stated loudly, "Reo Shihori. And who might you be?" He
laughed again, this time with a slight restraint. She may not be
a monster, but it doesn't mean she's friendly.

"Hibi Adelei. Hibi is fine." Her voice was calm, but her grip
was not. "What brings you to these woods?"

He laughed again. "Monster hunting. This is the only place
around to snag some goodies, so long as you're willing to fight
for them." He cleared his throat. "And you, miss Hibi? Out for a
nice little stroll through these nasty ol' woods?"

"You could say that," she responded. She tried to remain
confident and calm, as not to let onto the fact that she was
completely lost. "I'm assuming your hunt for goodies is going
fruitfully? You seem awfully sure of yourself."

Reo pulled out the gem he had won and flicked it into the air,
catching it swiftly a moment later. He chuckled. "Yeah, I've
been pretty successful so far. And yourself? You out here to
find a few goodies as well?" His voice echoed throughout the
trees. A slight breeze had picked up, wafting the smells of the
forest towards him. He began walking slowly towards Hibi's
voice.
What harm could she be to him, anyways? He fully sheathed his
swords, placing his hands on his hips. Little did he know how
much his pride could overtake him.

Hibi stepped out to reveal herself from behind the curtain of
trees, hand still on the hilt of her blade. She eyed the gem Reo
had just tossed in the air like a coin. "You could say that,"
she repeated, almost proud to be offering so little in the way
of information. After eyeing the man up and down, she loosened
her grip, but did not remove her hand from the hilt. Ever the
cautious one.
