-Maya had walked home arm in arm with Nacho. When he wasn’t
being a serious Nos, when he was around Maya he acted like a
giddy kid. They were laughing and whispering when they were
walking down the street. Had wanted to get all the gossip on her
date with Bastian, perhaps not just because he cared but to take
any information she told him higher up. Maya could so easily get
useful information, she was after all a thief and what nobody
considered was that a thief could steal secrets with out the
person uttering a word of importance. She was a very effective
spy even if she didn’t realize it.
Nacho had gotten the full details of her date and he drank it
all in. Once they reached her house though, she had given Nacho
a kiss on the cheek and a hug goodnight. The two were very
close, two peas in a pod when they got together. Nacho meant the
world to Maya as he was not only her brother by family but he
was her best friend. Her most trusted friend.
She had kicked off her heels and threw them in the center of the
living room of her shotgun style house. It was two floors, it
was a medium sized house because after all it was only her. She
had bounded barefoot up the stairs and throwing her dress off
her head so it hit the staircase behind her. She left a trail of
clothes and jewelry to her bathroom as if she would need to find
her way back. Maya got herself showered, brushed her teeth and
pampered herself.
She threw on a crop tank top along with a pair of short shorts
that hung off her hip exposing her hip bones. Her hair was wet
and it hung down in front of her. She jumped down from the
second to last step and walked to her kitchen to grab a bottle
of water. Her phone had dinged a few times while she was in the
shower and while she grabbing the water, but it could wait. She
needed to hydrate.-

When Maya got to her kitchen, she would see the silhouette of a
figure seated at her kitchen table in the dark. There was a
faint, damp odor, one that seemed to follow most Nosferatu that
had subterranean dwellings.
“Light off, please.” A primal, yet nasally voice cut through
clearly before she could turn it on. The Nosferatu Primogen
leaned forward, catching the briefest glimpse of light form her
living room, showing his horrid visage, a thick, jutting jaw,
and gnarled lips offering a smile made of thick, jagged fangs.
“Come, sit. I brought a friend…”
She would hear a squeak, and a spot would slip across the floor
to her. A large white rat with red eyes would zag between her
legs.
“Igor miss you, see?”
Roman always traveled with his personal spy network. The rodent
information system was vast, and people’s sentiment towards
rodents had become surprisingly soft in the modern age. It
almost gave the Primogen hope. Maya had always liked them. It
was a miracle they didn’t give her diseases as a child.
“I come to gossip. How was your date?”
If anyone was well informed, it was the Rat King.

“Oh, sorry!” -she apologized and quickly turned the lights off
in the kitchen. Her hand slapped hard against the switch and it
casted them into darkness, with only small light from her living
room, but allow the light to glow behind her while he sat in the
shadows. A contrast to who they were. Maya was bathed in the
sun, and he was living darkness. It was the story of her life
since she was brought into this world, and probably would be the
cause of her leaving it.
She placed her water on the table and let out an excited squeal
at seeing Igor, she reached down and swooped into her hands,
holding him nose to nose with her. She scrunched up her face
while making kissing sounds towards the rat. –
“Awww, my pumpkin! Maya missed Igor-a-licious!” -she said as she
snuggled the rat against her cheek before she placed him down on
the ground. She pulled a banana off the table, she opened it up
and laid it on the floor for him and gave Igor a little pat on
the head before she leaned forward and smiled.
One of the most simplest pleasures in life was gossiping with a
Nosferatu. They were so invested for their own reasons, but also
it had to bring them some entertainment and Maya was always full
of entertaining stories. She had a random life and some how she
was able to move in the light, being seen, but never
questioned.-
“Oh my god!” -she said as she splayed her hands on the table and
slide her arms across it till her head was on the table. She
quickly lifted it up, throwing her hair backwards. She had some
flair.-
“AHHHH-ma-zing” -she sang out in a slightly out of pitch tune
before smiling as if she had so many secrets to tell.- “He was
not what I’d thought he’d be at all. He was charming, he was
funny, and oh my gosh he pulled my seat out for me! I never had
anyone do that before! Like he was a real gentleman. Constantly
doting to make sure I was happy, that I liked my food. He didn’t
even try to ply me with wine.” -she spoke fast and in animated
way. Her hands moving while she spoke and with every word her
face was just lighting up. She had the same face when she was
speaking about her night with Butch to Nacho.
There was a brightness in her that had yet been snuffed out. The
world hadn’t always been kind to her, but the Nosferatus did
what they could to keep her safe and protected. She grew up in
one of the darkest of places only to be a life line.-
“He complimented me, said I was absolutely beautiful” -she said
putting her hand to her chest, lolling her head back with her
eyes closed.- “Swwoooon” -then she snapped back but made an iffy
face.-
“He was just on his phone a lot. Said he was in the middle of
closing a deal. He apologized and said he’d give me his full
attention once it was closed, but he had to monitor the
situation carefully as it was delicate.” -she gave a shrug of
her shoulders, and looked down at Igor.-
“What do you think, Igor-a-licious?” -she once again gave the
little rat scratches, Maya’s personality could tame most beasts,
but not all. Her attention was placed back on the Rat King. A
weary sigh left her body.-
“I dunno about him though. I feel like I’d come second to
whatever deals he was making and closing. Then again, I’d come
second to a lot of people, and that’s kind of sad. But not to
you though.” -she said leaning across the table and gave his
nose a playful tap.-

---------------------------------------------------------
Up close, she could see he had another rat in his hand,
gently, idly petting it, letting it shift from one warped,
monstrous claw to the other. Roman was not able to gossip like
the others. As the Primogeniture, he was in charge of the
Nosferatu Warren. All the gossip flowed through him, but he
wasn’t afforded the luxury of truly participating in it. Winnie
and Ignatius were who he usually “gossiped” with. He had Maya
had not been alone in quite some time. He carried himself like
an Uncle coming to have coffee.
Despite the walking masquerade breach that Maya was, something
in his twisted heart was touched by her behavior around his
Clan. He thought Nacho too sentimental, too human at times, but
he could understand why. The girl was infectious. And it was why
he limited his time around her. But he allowed himself to smile
as she opened up so freely. A breath of fresh air to a sewer
dweller — and a wealth of information. Once just know how to
listen.
“Oh, Maya, you are a trophy. Bastien is a hunter. He’s hunting
you. Maybe not to mount to his wall, but…” Those too wide lips
made a grin, “Adorn his arm, I mean. Arm candy, yes?” Not
quite sure on the modern term. His accent had him as slavic, so
many it was the Americanism of the idiom. “Ventrue have no soul
for hunting. Picky eaters. They don’t respect their quarry.
Nosferatu are hunters. Is true.”
They were. People thought of them as just nosey rumor hounds or
information brokers, but at the core of every Nosferatu was a
Hunter. They were just really good at hunting information. She
booped his crooked, wart covered nose and he canted his head.
“Never. The special Summer child of my warren. So tell me, do
you think you would come second to Butch?”
Igor would crawl across the table back to Roman, going up his
arm and to his shoulder. He would watch her, calmly waiting for
her to answer, while Igor nibbled on a pointed ear like he was
whispering secrets to the vampire.

“Romy.” -she said his name firmly with that gossipy tone.- “Can
you imagine if I was dating Bastian? I would give him a heart
attack even though it’s not beating. But I couldn’t for a second
imagine what he sees in me.” -she said this with a flick of her
eyes to him, again she said so much with so little words. She
had almost perfected code, because perhaps in some way she
wasn’t truly aware but also a little bit cognizant of what she
was doing.-
“Maybe he wants to hire me for a job, woo me into working for
anyone else. But he is kind of hunky.” -she said leaning over
the table with a cheesy smile on her face.- “You guys are the
best hunters. Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently.” -she
said that indignantly. The Nosferatu were her family. It was the
only family she had ever known. She could not really remember a
one of them ever being mean to her or scaring her or harming her
in anyway. They were always kind and gentle. She held them in
such high regards, and the one thing she swore was that no one
would ever harm her family.
She might not be as powerful vampires, but she had skills that
went beyond what most had realized. She wasn’t super human but
she learned a lot and was smarter then she appeared. Her level
of intelligence was shown when she spoke of things. Important
things that might seem miniscule to anyone else. Just a girl
raving about her date and boys with her favorite Uncle.
She watched the rat she didn’t see that was close to him, then
her eyes moved to Igor, she smiled sweetly as she watched him.
She had adored the rats and the other creepy crawlers she was
exposed too. But the rats were always her favorite. She spoiled
them when she got the chance and when they weren’t looking. She
had bonded with them too. She was enigmatic.-
“Butch?” -she gave out a laugh and shook her head.- “Oh, Romy.
You have a lot to learn about modern boys.” -she considered
Butch modern. He seemed to be more up with the times then the
Nozzies and other vampires.- “It was just a one time thing, I am
sure he’s moved on to the next pretty little thing that walks
into his bar. Buuuuuuut, if he asked I wouldn’t say no. The only
problem with him is, he’s def emotionally unavailable. And he’s
petty. Also pretty sue he’s still in love with his ex, even
though she’s with someone else, which is of course where I met
Bastian.”
-She stood up, walking over to the sink she pulled out a small
bowl and filled it up with water. She brought it back to the
table and placed it down. She had gotten water for the rats in
case they were thirsty. She knew that sometimes the Nozzies, for
all their compassion sometimes forgot that things needed water
and food to live. They did not neglect the rats, but Maya was
always mother henning them.-
“To answer your question though. No, I don’t think I’d come
second. Probably maybe fifth?” -she was smiling as she spoke and
didn’t sound too broken up about it.- “I don’t think we’ll ever
find out. He might use for another job though, and the money is
decent.” -most of the money she got she gave to them to store
away. They had no real use for it, but it made her feel better.
It made her feel like she was contributing.-
“He is cute though.” -she said as she rubbed her neck where he
had bitten her and tasted some of her blood.- “He bit me.” -she
said as the joy and the joking subsided. She wasn’t sure if
Nacho had told him, and she didn’t want too. Maya was a lot of
things but she wasn’t a liar, and she didn’t hide anything from
her family.- “I don’t know if that means anything.”

---------------------------------------------------------
“Romy” shook his head, as he could not believe her
dating Bastien. It would be a courtship formally, but it would
not be more than a business transaction by anything but name.
“Maybe. I think he saw a beautiful woman amidst high society and
thought…She. She will give me status. And he would be
right. The world, da?”
Venture were shallow beings. He wasn’t saying these things to
discredit her own value, but to highlight Bastien’s lack of
appreciation for her. Roman did not know what sort of husband,
or wife, or lover Maya would take, but he did not envision a
cruel man. Then again, given the past few days… maybe he did not
know her well enough. Maybe Ignatius had been a little too
lenient with his charge. “He has money. Take what you can,
nothing more.”
Roman grinned that toothy grin as she told him about “modern
boys”, his hairless brows raising in question. “I do? Maybe I
do.” Oh, the arrogance of youth. But he didn’t correct her. He
would sigh, as if lamenting Butch and Grace’s relationship woes.
“Typical. Let that be lesson to you. Kindred love is fickle,”
his face softened towards her. “Romantic love.” He corrected.
He chuckled lowly at her jokes, watching her as she moved around
the kitchen while petting his rats. He looked towards a crooked
up shoulder at Igor, the rat sniffing around his misshapen face,
a yellow and bloodshot eye glancing her way when she said “He
bit me”. He did not say anything, waiting for her to continue.
When she asked that question, he turned his face towards her
fully, and she could see the humor was not there. “You know it
is.”
Reaching a clawed hand up, he lifted Igor gently and set him on
the table with his companion, watching the two rats go for the
water. “Maybe Nacho has been neglecting his teachings. Look,
watch Igor.”
He would snap his finger and the Rat would turn his attention to
the vampire. Roman would draw his finger through the air, going
from one end of the table to the other, the rat following that
clawed digit. “He follow because he feed from me. Very old, for
rat. My blood keep him strong and loyal.” The rat would come
back to him, and he would deliver a small treat for the rat
before releasing it. “Butch not modern boy. Old and powerful.
Potent blood. When Kindred drink from mortal, there can be….side
effects. Not just pleasure. Power, influence. Control. Look, I
show you something else.”
His warped lips would manage to utter a rat-like series of
squeaks and the rats would come back to him, running up his
sleeves. He would reach inside of the many layers he wore,
pulling out the equivalent to a crown royal bag that began to
shake. Something was writhing in it.
“Not all is lost. You make a mistake, yes? Handsome man,
passion and danger… is okay.” He sat the bag down, letting it
flop a little on the table while he began untying the draw
string, the opening facing her. “If you ever…. Ever… drink from
Kindred…. This happen.”
The bag opened, and what came out was a mongrel rat. It looked
emaciated, its hair think, skin pale and sickly. It looked
rabid, foaming at little mouth of sharp teeth, eyes black and
vicious. It sprung form the table, and Roman’s gnarled fist
caught it mid air, holding it close for her to see as the rat
struggled, keening like a beast before it bit into the meat of
Roman’s hand. As soon as it pierced his flesh, tasting his
blood, it calmed and began to suckle on the wound it created.
“See?”

-She let out a small sigh as he spoke because Maya was whimsy
and he was more logical which was what she probably needed
sometimes. To be brought down back to earth. She seemed to
fluctuate between reality and her own little world. Maya did not
make it easy to protect her since she was carefree by nature and
by nurture. She had been loved, and a child raised with love
turned into a different kind of adult. She knew love from the
moment she took her first breath with the Nozzies. While they
might not love her per say, it was how she felt when she was
with them. It was her perception that she was truly loved. –
“I’ll take him for all he’s worth if I can.” -she said with a
knowing voice because Maya could do that too. She’d have him
give her the world and in return she would give that world to
the Nosferatus.-
“I think you are making it seem like he put any other thought in
his head beside a base one, Roman.” -she joked with him, meaning
that he was giving Bastian too much credit, to Maya he was only
thinking with his lower brain. Saw a pretty girl and let his
lustful thoughts take over.
Maya then laughed lightly and shook her head towards him,
because he was taking every very literally and she was used to
that with them. But yet it never dampened her spirits she still
remained jovial and would always be smiling. Even when things
were bad one could still count her to bring it back around to
something happy. Though she realized she would never experience
Kindred love. That caused a wistful breath because something
about eternal love sounded romantic. At the heart of the woman
she was romantic. She wanted to be wooed, to be adored. And to
think all of this came from their rearing of her.
When she made her confession to him, it was as of all the air
was sucked from the room. It felt heavy and hung there like an
executioner’s ax. The air was thick and it made her
uncomfortable but he needed to know what had happened. She
stayed silent and let him speak and show her what he needed. She
watched Igor carefully. She realized in this situation she was
the rat. Except the rat feed from Roman, and Butch tasted her.
She wouldn’t exactly say he fed since he only took a nip of
blood from her but even that was enough to put her in a
situation that nobody wanted her to be in.
It was a mistake, mostly because she hadn’t known it was going
to happen. She had been so caught up in her own feelings of lust
and pleasure that she didn’t have the mind to stop him. She
should have known she should had laid at least one ground rule
before starting. No biting. No drinking. However she listened
more carefully when he was explaining, no showing her, what
would happen if she ever drank from a kindred.
She watched as the mongrel rat appeared, she did turn her face
up but if given a chance she would try to befriend that rat too.
Except apart of her told her that might not be possible. Any
other rat she would probably try to reach out and pet this one
though she kept her hands to herself. When it sprung she did
admittedly rear backwards till the rat was caught.-
“I understand.” -she said solemnly because the point was mad,
and she was so appreciative of how he showed her and told her.
There was education to be had and Maya never brushed off what he
told her. She listened, took notes, and tried to do better. His
one hand was being suckled by the rat creature, so she had
reached across the table and took his free gnarled hand and held
it in hers. Her skin was so utterly soft like silk wrapping
around a dead tree bark.-
“I’ll never drink from him, or any other Kindred. I promise
you.” -this time her voice was serious, because he didn’t show
her to scare her. He showed her because he actually cared about
her. In her eyes anyway. She gave his hand a small squeez.- “I
love you, Roman and I so appreciate everything you do for me.
Even when I mess up, you show me so much kindness.” -her hand
slipped back away from his and she watched the scene but that
smile then was placed back on her lips.-
“I don’t think you have to worry. Like I said I’m sure the next
time I see Butch, it’ll just be for a job. I also won’t date
Bastian. I’m pretty sure if had to chose between becoming
I’ll-learn-to-love-that Rat and dating Bastian full time, I’ll
chose the rat. Because I know even if I was a rat creature, I’d
still have a home with you. You don’t love me for my looks.”
-even if they didn’t love her the sentiment was still there. Her
thoughts on Butch and Bastian were all self defense mechanisms.
It was how she prepared herself for not getting hurt and not
getting attached, because it was so easy to see how quickly she
got attached. Some of the human men she had fallen for,
sometimes disappeared.-

Many of the Nosferatu in the Warren were drawn to her
because something so innocent, so sweet and pure, was alien to
them on a regular basis. She instilled in them what fleeting
humanity many of them had. And it taught them all how to hide
secrets. So much so that it had been a game to some: hiding the
human girl. For others, it was a duty. They were all monsters
throughout the Warren, but they still had something akin to
decency. Perhaps what Maya was too blinded by in her love was
that she was often times the only target of their
kindness. The Warren had been forbade from harming the girl, or
allow harm to come to her, under penalty of banishment, or
worse. The few that had protested were silenced. It had been
agreed that her safety was for the security of the Nosferatu
stretching from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, where one of their’s
sat as Prince. Only he and his most trusted broodmates knew of
her existence, but the Warren of New Orleans was only 10 strong,
and it was not easy to keep secrets from such a small community.
They had to be united, to understand what this was for.
God-damned Ignatius and his emotions. They could love her,
surely. Roman was not so callous to deny affection. But there
were boundaries that were being crossed. This was not him acting
as Primogen for his people — far from it. This was him being a
Nosferatu. Clan came first. She would sympathize, but she
couldn’t fully understand until she was truly ready. She still
had a lot to learn.
“I do not understand ‘modern boys’, but you do not understand
Kindred men,” he almost snorted. He didn’t have time to explain
to her the finer points of Kindred mating. The Beasts of Man and
Kindred were different animals with different desires. They
moved on from the subject, for now.
“And do not let them drink from you. Swear it.” he held
her gaze until she did. It had been reiterated multiple times
but that was there was no confusion. The rat had calmed down,
sniffing harmlessly at the air after having got its fix. Roman
squeezed her hand back, then withdrew it to put the rat back in
the sack gently, tucking them away into his coat once more.
“Roman kindness have limits.” He warned very softly. He patted
her hand gently before moving to stand. He was not tall, with a
curve and hunched spine.
“Don’t date Bastien. Don’t work for Butch. Both men… bad,” he
made a disgusted face with his disgusting face. “You are right.
I don’t, and you would. You would be my favorite little rat.
Please, show me to the door” he moved to tussle her hair gently.
If she got ahead of him, when she turned around, he looked like
a mild-mannered man in his 50s, bald with strong features,
wearing a plain, unimaginative suit. At the door, he would turn
and smile, and she could almost see Roman through the illusion.
“You should come to Warren tomorrow night. We throw party for
Ignatius. He’s going to Baton Rouge.”

-Maya had sworn to him that she wouldn’t let anyone drink from
her again. It was in this moment that she realized something.
Before her meeting Butch, everything had been muck more relaxed.
It was the moment Nacho introduced her to Butch did she realized
that somehow Nacho brought her deeper into the world of Kindred
then she was supposed to be. Some Kindred had been curious about
her, but they could easily play it off as the strange nature of
the Nosferatus. But Nacho’s carelessness with her had involved
into something she shouldn’t.
It got the attention of two powerful Kindred. Bastian and Butch.
One was probably looking for something pretty and the other a
good time. Either could fit that description. Maya for as
confident as she was really put herself down in her own head via
her thoughts about the men in her life. She thought that was
just going to be her main issue, but no. She was smart enough to
realize that things had suddenly changed for her. In that quick
of a moment she landed herself into the middle of the Kindreds.
What she didn’t know was that Grace and Jane were also going to
be looking into her, which means more Kindred might get word of
her and also start nosing around. Some with out the subterfuge.
Whatever Nacho did either on purpose or accident wasn’t going to
end favorable for any of them. Maya was just unaware of how much
it might affect her. Maybe it’ll all just blow over. Bastian
would lose interest, Butch would want to hire her but she was
told she couldn’t. Her phone dinged a few more times and she had
been ignoring it. Now it just meant nothing to her.
It was five words that Roman said that shattered her world.
Although she said she would be there with a smile on her face as
she showed him the door. Her heart had shattered in her chest.
Nacho was her best friend. He was the one she told everything
too. When she shut the door, she turned around with her back on
the door and she started to cry. Tears streamed down her face
because she knew wouldn’t see Nacho again.
It felt as though the rug had been pulled under her, knees
giving out as she slid to the floor. To everyone Maya was this
bright point of light, but there was sadness in her. There was a
yearning in her, a soft and subtle heartbreak. This was the side
no one ever saw. The worst part was she had no one to call to
comfort her. Nacho was always the first person she went too when
she was sad, when she was crying. And now she couldn’t even go
to him. There was no one else for her to talk too. Nacho had
been her only friend. She had people she knew, but she couldn’t
call one of them up to tell them what was happening. The feeling
of being alone just washed over her and it scared her. Hugging
her knees she would stay on the floor for a while, silently
sobbing for her best friend. Silently sobbing for the fear that
gripped in her chest. Everything felt wrong. The air felt bad.
And all she wanted was a hug and for someone to tell her it
would be alright. But the one person who would have given that
was going to Baton Rouge.-
