The Inspiration for Freeport

So why the name Freeport? Three reasons, in brief.
1. The sailors of Gor are not the most imaginative sort. It is
easy to believe the name Freeport stuck simply because it was a
"free port." This is how many real world port cities, such as
Freeport, Texas, got their names.
2. There is a pirate haven called Freeport at the heart of one
of my favorite novels - The King's Buccaneer by Raymond E.
Feist. It is a ripping yarn of boys becoming men, a parable of
how one overcomes their limits to become better, and an epic
sea-faring quest to save the world.
There are also several scenes of women being forcibly stripped
and chained, for those of you who have little interest in coming
of age stories and pirates. Our Freeport will likely have a fair
bit of this as well, as this IS Gor.
3.Freeport happens to be the name of my favorite fantasy RPG.
(Outside of Gor, of course!)

since the days of Dungeons and
Dragons Third Edition, this Freeport is a pirate haven striving
for respectability, despite its sordid past. It is a City of
Adventure, comparable to Lankhmar from the Fafhrd and the Gray
Mouser stories.
Our Freeport is not a city (yet) and it does not have the magic
or trappings of the Freeport RPG. This is, after all, Gor. Yet
we hope to emulate the same swashbuckling spirit of adventure
and the idea of a melting pot on the edge of the world where
many come seeking a fresh start or refuge from their pasts.
