ALL: It was good to be home again after the bustle of the Sardar
Fair. Kardelen had set Lehna to the task of coaxing warmth back
into its walls after their absence, while Martin had gone to
finish a few last matters before they made their way to the
Festival for its first night. The familiar rhythms of home
settled her nerves almost at once. She had already indulged in a
long, steaming bath upon their return, letting travel-weariness
melt from her muscles, and now she was nearly ready to leave for
the Great Hall. Anticipation thrummed through her as she
dressed, curious to see what the Merchant Council had arranged
for the people of Freeport—and for whatever travelers might
arrive for this final gathering before deep winter truly set its
       claws into the North.
She chose warmth without sacrificing festivity: a long, lined
tunic of rich red that brushed her calves, thick leather
trousers tucked neatly into knee-high, fur-lined boots. A
matching fur-edged cloak rested across her shoulders, heavy and
comforting. Her long blonde hair she had braided herself, not as
neatly as when Martin’s hands aided her, but serviceable. She
eyed the braid in the mirror, lips quirking with fond amusement.
If he returned within the next ahn, she would gladly let him
correct it. She nodded once at her reflection, satisfied enough.
Thick gloves were tucked into her belt for later, when she would
have to brave the cold beyond their door. For now, the cabin was
warm and welcoming. With a lightness to her step, she made her
way downstairs, cloak and tunic fluttering softly behind her.
She headed for the kitchen in search of a small bite—just enough
to tide her over until the feast began—her mood buoyant, heart
already halfway to the Great Hall and the promise of the night
       ahead.

small porch area maintained Kardelen and those of the home.=-
ALL: She had gathered a small handful of dried meat and fruit to
tide her over, and now sat in one of the chairs drawn close to
the fire, a book resting open on her lap. The flames cast a
warm, flickering glow across the room as she watched the door
with quiet patience, hoping to hear Martin’s familiar step
before too much longer. She had no desire to make her way to the
Festival without him. With the ports open and strangers
filtering into Freeport, caution weighed on her thoughts. It did
not feel wise to be out and about alone—not without Martin or
Corso at her side. The possibility of crossing paths with Eamon,
or worse, Kadluk, lingered like a shadow at the edge of her
       mind.
Her healer’s bag was already slung over her shoulder, prepared
out of habit as much as foresight. Celebrations had a way of
breeding injuries: feats of strength gone awry, a thrown stone
striking the wrong mark, a man straining himself in a moment of
pride. She was used to being ready for such things. One never
truly knew what the night might bring. She glanced toward the
windows; the last light of day had long since faded, leaving
only darkness beyond the glass. A soft sigh escaped her,
temptation tugging at her to head for the Great Hall on her own
       rather than wait any longer.
Her blue-grey gaze drifted to where her bow rested against the
wall. “Guess I’m bringing my bow along too,” she murmured, more
resigned than fearful. Rising from the chair, she crossed the
room and lifted the bow into her hand, settling its familiar
weight with a practiced ease. She adjusted the quiver over her
shoulder, ensuring it sat comfortably against her back. “Just in
case,” she added softly, the words carrying equal parts prudence
       and resolve.

--|Primum, non Nocere|--: It was as she was strapping the quiver
to herself that Martin came into their cabin and smiled at the
sight of her wearing the bow he had picked out for her. "And to
think you chide me for going about heavily armed," he said with
a smirk. "Shall I fetch my spare throwing axe so we may match
entirely?" Like her, he wore a knife on his belt, but his was a
long hunting knife that would be a short sword in her hands. He
also had a throwing axe tucked through his belt on the right
side. "Or did you have iti mind that we should try the archery
contest with our own bows this time?"

...Longbow Hunter... : She nearly yelped in surprise as Martin
came through the door just as she was strapping on her quiver.
Spinning toward him, she broke into a warm smile at once, the
tension easing from her shoulders as relief washed over her.
“Ah! There you are, love,” she said with a soft chuckle. “You
may want to gather whatever weapons you plan to carry—there will
likely be strangers in and around the Great Hall tonight.”
She shifted the quiver to settle it more comfortably, then
shrugged lightly. “And besides, I heard that for the archery
contests we’re permitted to use our own bows if we have them. I
would much rather trust mine than whatever contest bows they’ve
set out.” Her gaze flicked over him fondly before she turned her
attention back to herself, double-checking that she had
everything she needed—gloves tucked securely at her belt, cloak
fastened, nothing forgotten that might leave her freezing if the
games kept them out of doors for awhile.
“But once you’ve gathered what you need,” she added, looking
back up at him with a smile, “perhaps we should go and make our
appearances, aye?” There was a teasing glint in her blue-grey
eyes. “I do recall you mentioning you wished there was a feat of
strength you could try your hand at. Maybe we can find one.”

--|Primum, non Nocere|--: Martin smiled a bit as he came up
behind his mate, slid his arms around her waist and pulled her
close. Well, close as he could manage with her quiver in the
way. "I already have everything I need right here," he
whispered. " Though I can see why you'd want your own bow after
the last two contests. I'm running out of clever things to wager
if you lose," he said as a wicked grin crossed his lips. "And I
do need to save something for our first night together once
we're officially Companions." His hand dipped low to give her
       backside a teasing slap.
"I welcome your caution, but while there are many strangers in
town, we are not unprepared. I know Captain Song has his crew
watching the harbor and trading shifts with the Crimson
Corsair's men. Between that and the village watch and every
fighting man in the city, which is most of them, anyone out to
cause trouble will be struck down like Thor himself was holding
the hammer." He tried to sound confident as he said this, but he
shared his Mate's paranoia. Safe as they were in their own home,
a Festival made it far too easy for strangers to move about the
village. And on Gor the word for strange was the same as the
word for enemy. And in some remote areas, it was also used as
       the word for "target."

...Longbow Hunter... : She hummed softly as Martin came up
behind her, leaning back into him as much as the quiver at her
shoulders would allow. His whispered words drew a smile from her
lips, and she reached up to rub the fronts of his arms where
they circled her, comforted by the familiar weight of his
embrace. “Likewise,” she murmured in return, the warmth in her
voice unmistakable, “but I still think we should go and enjoy
the Festival.” Her smile lingered, bright and unguarded—she
doubted it would fade any time soon. He fit her life in ways she
hadn’t known to hope for. “Aye, I’ll fare far better with my own
bow than with some contest weapon. I lost so badly last time,”
she added with a quiet chuckle, though she hadn’t truly minded.
Their wagers had always been half the fun.
“Perhaps this time we’ll simply compete for the joy of it,” she
went on lightly, “instead of wagering gifts and favors.” She
laughed again, teasing. “Though I do enjoy spoiling you when I
manage—by some slim margin—to beat you.” She stepped gently out
of the circle of his arms, turning as he spoke of Captain Song
and the fighting men of the village being out in force. His
confidence eased her lingering unease, and she nodded in
       agreement.
“You’re probably right,” she said softly. “I may be
overreacting… but a little caution never hurt anyone.” With a
small shrug, she pulled her gloves free from her belt and tugged
them on, glancing back at him with an affectionate smile. “Are

pride warming her as much as the fur at her shoulders as they
started toward the Great Hall. “Your plan sounds like a plan,”
she agreed, nodding her blonde head—then froze. “I did not
mention it to anyone in charge about the companioning, was I
supposed to?!” The words tumbled out in a sudden rush of panic.
Her mind leapt immediately to pink velvet, careful stitches, and
long hours spent hovering in the seamstress’s shop. When they’d
returned from the Fair, the dress had consumed her every spare
thought, nearly two full days gone in fittings and fine
adjustments. Gods, she’d paid a fair sum for it too.
She followed him to the door, the warmth of the cabin giving way
to the crisp bite of the night air as they stepped outside and
began down the street toward the Hall. Lanternlight flickered
along the paths, and her worry deepened. “I knew I forgot
something,” she winced, tightening her grip on his arm. “Perhaps
we can mention it to someone once we arrive?” She glanced up at
him, searching his face, hopeful. “The Temple didn’t look overly
busy when we returned… surely it’s not too big of a misstep?”

already spoke to the Godi at the Temple and set things up for
the last day of the Festival I just wanted to make sure there
wasn't some big crowd waiting to cheer us on or congratulate us
or something that we were making wait for us to show up." He
smiled. "You know I loathe being the center of attention, but
for you I can tolerate it," he said with a smile. "Of course
I'll tolerate it a bit more after we've had a bit of warming
       cider."
He looked down to her as she gripped his arm possessively as if
the wind might carry her away. His grey eyes met her stormy
blues and he leaned down to kiss her quickly. It was a simple
kiss. Not the great warming things they often exchanged when no
one was looking. But something that would keep them both heated
enough to survive the rest of the walk up to the Great Hall.

...Longbow Hunter... : She let out a soft, relieved sigh when he
told her he had already spoken with the Temple officials. The
tension she hadn’t quite realized she was carrying eased from
her shoulders at once. “I don’t think I need some great crowd,”
she said quietly, a fond smile touching her lips. “As long as I
am there, and you are there—and of course the Godi, as you
called them—that is all I truly need.” If others came, then so
be it. She had, after all, spent a considerable sum on a very
fine dress, and it would be nice if a few familiar faces were
there to offer their congratulations on their official
       Companioning.
She rose onto her toes to press a brief kiss to his lips,
sighing softly as he withdrew just as quickly, keeping the
gesture chaste and proper for the street. Hand in arm, they
continued on toward the Great Hall, the glow of lanterns and
firelight growing brighter with every step. Then she stopped
short. “Oh my,” she breathed, blue-grey eyes widening as she
took in the square before the Hall. Light spilled across the
snow-dusted ground, banners and decorations carefully arranged,
fires crackling, voices and laughter already filling the air.
“That is… surprisingly well done.” A delighted smile spread
across her face as she took it all in. “Someone has clearly been

--|Primum, non Nocere|--: He looked to her and chuckled. The
sight of the hall with all the torches lit and candles set up in
all the alcoves was indeed impressive. "Aye. Well, best get used
to this site. In the harshest winters, most will gather here
within the Hall to share meals and heat with each other. It's a
bit less festive than this, but it does bring out the sense of
community a good Northern village should have." His eyes gleamed
a bit at that as he looked over all those assembled along the
tables, sharing a drink, a meal or a laugh. "In some places, the
High Jarls will compete to see who can get the best bards to
guest with them during the long Winters. Or they simply hold
them hostage until the Thassa thaws and then send them on their
way with a hat full of gold for their trouble." He glanced to
one side and sure enough saw Captain Song standing by one of the
hearths, telling a tale to some enraptured children too old for
the puppet show being done in another corner by a traveling
player. "I think there's little need for that here, given our
High Captain's former occupation." he said dryly.

...Longbow Hunter... : As they stepped fully into the Festival
Square, Kardelen listened to him with an easy smile, her gaze
drifting over the lively scene before them. She didn’t often
come to the Great Hall on her own—she preferred the quiet
comfort of their cabin or the familiar calm of the healing
hut—but perhaps, if he was away in the woods more often, she
would have to make a habit of it. “Aye, it is a nice place,” she
admitted with a soft chuckle. “I’ve been to the Hall once or
twice, but Lehna is a far better cook.”
She took in the bustle around them, noting the firepits spaced
throughout the square, their warmth drawing clusters of
villagers close. Her eyes caught on the archery range first,
then the axe-throwing lanes—one brow lifting in curiosity as she
spotted a Free Woman throwing alongside her man with practiced
confidence. Beyond that were people balancing on wineskins,
laughter ringing out, and a pit of sand where slaves wrestled
for the crowd’s amusement. Kardelen rolled her eyes faintly and
looked away. “There is so much happening out here,” she said
lightly. “It’s almost surprising anyone is bothering to go
       inside the Hall at all.”
She laughed again, then paused as his comment about the bards
sank in. “And I had not heard that about the bards being held
hostage for entertainment,” she added, half amused, half uneasy.
“That’s either very funny… or absolutely terrifying, especially
if one were a female bard.” Her brow furrowed briefly. “I
haven’t seen many performing lately. Perhaps I’ll finally hear
       one tonight.”

--|Primum, non Nocere|--: He nodded. "The female Singers tend to
travel in groups with the players for that reason. I escorted
more than a few such groups through my steading now and then,"
he explained, speaking of his time before he'd bet her when he
was the one Ranger assigned to patrol a sizeable chunk of the
Northern forest off the western coast near Kassau. "Of course
there is some difference between a Captive and a slave. Captives
have certain rights and are still recognized as Free. Though
some less than honorable High Jarls have held women captive with
the intent of forcing them to beg for a collar. Of course it is
also said that it is bad luck to try and enslave a Singer, for
music must be free and so must those who make it. Not that it
won't stop some slavers outside of cities from trying to prey on
the artists. Though most give them wide berth for fear of bad
publicity. All it takes is one Singer getting loose to spread
word of a village or city being home to dishonorable Slavers who
ignore the laws of the North and then no gleeman or acrobats
will grace your festival ever again." Martin shook his head.
"Too, there are some who think Singers are magicians who work
curses on those that threaten then. In any case, few Jarls are
willing to chance it, even if they play at holding the bard as
captive for the image of the thing."

...Longbow Hunter... : She nodded as she listened, his
explanation settling easily in her mind. “Aye, that does make
sense,” she agreed softly. “Especially with what I’ve heard of
the winters up here, and how Thassa freezes solid. I imagine
people grow desperate for music and stories when the nights are
that long and cold.” As they drew closer to the Great Hall, her
attention was caught by a well-lit circle etched into the dirt,
ringed with torches and watched over by a few curious onlookers.
She slowed, blue-grey eyes narrowing slightly as she studied it.
“Oh… that is something I’ve not seen before,” she murmured,
tilting her head. A heartbeat later, recognition dawned.
“Oh—wait. That’s a bond circle.” She let out a small, nervous
laugh and shook her head. “I’ll be staying far away from that.”
She’d read enough of Northern customs to know better, and the
stories alone were enough to give her pause. With a quick,
deliberate shift in focus, she smiled up at him. “Shall we head
inside the Hall?” she suggested warmly. “I could very much use
some food—and perhaps something hot to drink.”

--|Primum, non Nocere|--: He nodded and did not chide her for
cling a bit more closely to him at the sight of the bond circle.
"You have been studying. Something in one of those books Myron
recovered?" he asked with open curiosity. "How is our would-be
Captain, by the way? I know he stayed here rather than go to
Sardar to supervise that ship you're having built." That
saddened him somewhat, for the young warrior had proven himself
a true friend to both of them after having been a model employee
in Kardelen's service in Port Kar and he would have welcomed
having him to help him scout around the fair for trouble and
news of Eamon and Kadluk. Still, he knew Myron had his heart
said on running Kardelen's ship and helping run her potions and
medicines to the other trade islands and he thought that would
be a good thing for their village and the surrounding islands.
Once the Thassa thawed and travel was safe again. Well, safer,
for even in calmer times the Thassa was treacherous.
"A meal and a drink or two would be welcome," he agreed as they
moved away form the bond circle. "And I wouldn't worry. The bond
circle is usually left out at festivals as a warning. A reminder
to Free Women to be cautious and a reminder to Free Men of the
rules regarding such things. The fair is meant to be a safe
thing but.... well, passions can run hot and a woman might do
something she will regret. Or a Man might go too far trying to
trick a respectable Companion into something more advantageous
to himself to the annoyance of her family. After all, there is
nothing to stop them from trussing him and up and tossing him
into the circle." At this he offered a slight smirk.

the sound warm and easy. “Yes, I have,” she admitted. “I
wouldn’t call a place home without learning it inside and out.”
A fond smile touched her lips. “Aye, it was one of my father’s
old books—one of the ones Myron brought back on his last journey
from Port Kar.” Martin's attention made her feel cherished,
steady, safe in a way she still marveled at. “And the future
Captain is doing just fine,” she went on lightly. “He says the
Knife will be ready to sail as soon as Thassa thaws. I checked
in with him between frenzied dress fittings.” She shook her head
with a quiet laugh. “I nearly ran myself ragged going back and
forth between the warehouse and the seamstress. He was
disappointed to miss the Fair, but at least the ship kept him
       occupied.”
She was visibly relieved as they put distance between themselves
and the bond circle. “A warning, hm? I’ll remember that,” she
said with a playful smile, tossing him a quick wink over her
shoulder as they climbed the steps toward the Great Hall. “And
trussing up a Northern man?” Kardelen burst into laughter. “Not
too likely—you’re all giants.” She shook her head, still
smiling, then fell silent as they entered the Hall.
Her eyes widened once more. “Wow…” A stage had been set at one
end, lanterns casting a golden glow over the stage where
instruments waited leaned against the wall or down upon the
surface of the stage. Tables for gambling games lined one side,
while even a few slave contests had been arranged nearby. Slave
girls hurried back and forth from the kitchens, arms laden with
trays of steaming food and hot drink, weaving expertly between
long tables and benches already filling with people. “And
again,” she said in awe, “I have to say it—this is impressive.”
Her gaze lingered on the trays as they passed. “That food looks
       incredible.”

of the girl's brothers are required on the rare occasions it
happens. Usually violence breaks out and they try to force
someone to cut them down first. Few Northmen relish the chance
to become a thrall and would rather die with a weapon in their
hand. Though I'm sure you read that as well," he added dryly as
he guided her over to one of the empty tables and allowed her to
take her seat first before he sat across from her. "If they're
doing some grand announcement to start things, we've already
missed it. Which suits me fine. Probably Alucard decided to get
on with it so the feast and drinking and fun could begin," he
said as he glanced around to see if the Chief Administrator or
       his companion were about.

in the sound. “Ah yes… well, you know who my brothers are.”
Kadal, at least, would be thoroughly displeased if anything
involving such a circle ever befell her. She didn’t voice the
rest of the thought—the other brother didn’t deserve the space,
and she kept that darkness carefully from her expression. She
allowed him to guide her to an empty place at one of the long
tables and took her seat across from him, the warmth of the Hall
settling pleasantly around her. She smiled at his comment about
missing the opening announcement, amusement brightening her
       eyes.
“Aye, I’m not much for announcements either,” she agreed
lightly. “Especially since once they’re done, it means we get to
enjoy the food all the sooner.” Her blue-grey gaze drifted to a
passing tray as a slave girl hurried by, the rich scent of
roasted meat curling through the air. Kardelen inhaled quietly,
her smile deepening—content, warm, and very much ready to enjoy

Lady," he said with an exaggerated bit of poshness. Or as posh
as he could manage in his deep Northern accent. He waved over at
one of the slaves - a buxom redhead in a snug woolen kirtle that
was cut nearly to he navel and slit high on the sides to display
her branded thigh. "Two mugs of warm cider," Martin said. "We'll
