Rules for Axe Throw

Axe-Throw: (Free Men & Free Women)
Please note, when participating in this event the Women have
much smaller, lighter, throwing axes made just for this game.
Men use traditional Northern hand axes.
The Objective:
Throw 3 axes at the target. Highest score wins.
Rules:
-Make 3 posts of throwing your axe at the target.
-Roll a 6-sided die (1d20), after each post.
-Die rolls of 1 are a complete miss and cross your fingers you
didn't take someone's head off - ZERO POINTS
-Die rolls of 2-5 is worth 1 point.
-Die rolls of 5-10 is worth 2 points.
-Die rolls of 11-15 is worth 3 points.
-Die rolls of 15-19 is worth 4 points.
-Die rolls of 20 are a exact dead center hit on the wooden
target! - FIVE POINTS
-Please post scripts of your axe throws for tallying of points.
**This game was added from the PoD Forums, thank you for your
ingenuity! I did switch it to be a 1d20 for outcome and
scoring.**

ALL: Once the stones were reset and his weapons retrieved,,
Martin moved down the lane and considered the other games. He
saw the archery range but dismissed it. The state his hands were
in after the feat of strength, he wasn't sure he could pull back
the string. Besides, he wanted to do that one with Kardelen. It
had become a tradition of sorts for them. Then his gaze fell
upon the axe throwing range. Rubbing his wrists, he made his way
down the path.
"Tal, Ranger," said the man running the throwing range. Martin
couldn't recall his name or caste, but such things were usually
academic in the North, where most men learned the basics of many
trades and practiced the ones that suited them best. Martin
simply nodded and patted the axe on his belt. "I trust I am
allowed to use my own?" The man nodded. "Long as you don't mind
grabbing it from the target yourself. Just wait until the call
to clear the range. Might get a bit messy if you don't."
Martin returned the grim smile as he drew his throwing axe and
gripped it lightly in his right hand. He walked to the fence and
scoped his target, closing one eye as he would drawing his bow.
Judging his wrists recovered from the Feat of Strength, he
waited for the okay to throw as other Free Men and Women came up
to make their own shots. When the call to throw was made, he
released.

ALL: Perhaps his judgement that his wrists were recovered were
not wholly accurate.
The good news is that nobody is injured by the wild throw. The
bad news is it does hit the target. In the next lane.
There was some laughter from the other players at this. "I hope
he's better with a bow than an axe!" some smartarse called.
Martin said nothing. It was beneath his dignity as a Free Man
and a Ranger to acknowledge such insults. He merely went to the
target once the all-clear was called and retrived his one axe
before returning to the throwing line.
He rubbed his wrists tenderly and gripped the axe a bit more
firmly this time. He took his time in lining up the shot,
waiting for the call to throw.
The call came out and he reeled back and released.

ALL: Well... at least this time it was his target.
The chuckles were a bit softer this time, but Martin didn't let
it get to him. He really should have rested more before trying
this. He hoped he hadn't hurt himself with the Feat of Strength.
On the bright side, if he did, he'd have the care of his Mate to
look forward to later.
The axe retrieved, he idly wondered if his personal axes were
properly balanced. He had little enough occasion to use them
much less hone them. The bow was his weapon of choice and he
tested it and his arrows well enough. But what of the axes?
Something to look into after this, he thought. The sudden call
to throw came and he put a bit of twirl into the axe as he
released.

ALL: The third axe landed firm and true. Not quite in the
center, but within the range beyond. A respectable effort at the
end, he thought. Still, the axe would need to be checked. An
errand to attend to now while he waited for Kardelen to finish
whatever business she was attending to at the moment.
FINAL SCORE: 5

up and was about to depart the Axe Throwing contest as he spied
his mate and Corso walking up. He waved to the Warrior and
hugged his Mate as they stepped up. "I see your preparations are
done."
Corso nodded. "She just set the record for the day at the
Women's Feat of Strength."
Martin raised an eyebrow. "Indeed? I have done the same for the
Men," he said plainly. "Nearly made it to the finish line, but I
think I may have strained my grip. My performance at the axe
throwing range was not so good." He jerked his head at Corso and
smiled at the bodyguard. "You can go try it yourself. I'll take
over the duty of keeping Kardelen out of trouble," The older
warrior chuckled as he left the two lovers together and Martin
motioned to the axe-throwing line. "After you, my love."

...Longbow Hunter... : She had decided on the axe throw next,
and followed Corso toward that lane, the firelight glinting off
the metal targets ahead. Her blue-grey eyes lifted—and found
Martin. At once, her face lit with a smile so open and bright it
could only belong to someone deeply, undeniably in love. “Aye, I
did better than I thought with those rocks!” she laughed as his
arms came around her. “They were heavy—though nothing compared
to what the men were hauling down the line.”
“Have fun, Corso,” she added warmly as Martin said he would take
over escorting her. She did feel safer with either of them at
her side, and the knot of tension she carried among so many
strangers eased noticeably. She turned to Martin as he brought
her up to the booth. “Thank ye, love,” she said, turning back
toward the booth. “I’m excited to see these axes they made just
for the women.”
The attendant was already waiting and placed three throwing axes
into her hands. Kardelen examined them with interest—the metal
smooth and bright, the balance surprisingly light compared to a
Northern hand axe. “Oh… these are very light,” she observed with
a grin, turning one slightly, “but quite sharp, I see.”
She stepped up to the line, holding two axes loosely in her left
hand while she weighed the first in her right. The wooden target
ahead was deeply scarred, bearing the marks of countless prior
throws. Familiar focus settled over her, the same calm she found
with a bow in hand. She drew in a breath, exhaled slowly, and
pulled her arm back—then released, sending the axe spinning
forward toward the target.

an axe of your own," he said as she admired the heft of the
weapon. She had often joked about how heavily armed he normally
traveled but had come to see the wisdom of it since joining him
in the forest a few times. Beyond being a fine weapon, a
well-balanced axe was also a worthy tool. Much like a
well-crafted hunter's knife.
As the axe landed in one of the mid circles he nodded approval.
"A fine start," he allowed.

...Longbow Hunter... : The axe struck the target with a solid
thunk, the bladed edge biting cleanly into the wood. Kardelen’s
eyebrows shot up in surprise, her mouth parting in a soft laugh
of disbelief. For a heartbeat she simply stared at it,
half-expecting the thing to rattle loose and bounce back toward
some unfortunate bystander. “Hey, look!” she exclaimed, turning
back toward Martin, blue-grey eyes bright as she beamed at him.
“It hit the target!” She laughed again, clearly pleased with
herself. “And yes—you did offer to get me an axe of my own.
After this, I may very well take you up on that.”
For once, the weight of old worries—of shadows from her past
reaching for her even here in Freeport—seemed to slip away
entirely. This was just fun. Simple, honest fun. She chuckled
softly as she shifted another axe into her right hand, taking a
moment to set her feet properly. Instinct took over. Left foot
forward, right set back, just as she would with her bow. She
lifted her arm, drew her forearm back, shoulders squaring as she
focused on the scarred wood ahead. Despite herself, she had to
fight the urge to squeeze her eyes shut—she very much preferred
her axes lodged in targets rather than flying wildly into the
crowd. With a steady breath, she released, sending the second
axe spinning forward through the firelit air.

such a thing as beginner's luck but that.... that was not that.
Martin's jaw did not drop like that of the man tending the
arena, who then chuckled. "Well, clearly the Ranger hasn't been
teaching her that. She's already beaten his score."
Martin did not bristle at this but did nod. "Indeed not. She may
be a daughter of Eir, but there is something of the valkyrie in
her as well," he said, evoking the name of the Healing goddess
and the warrior maidens said to escort those who died in
honorable battle to Valhalla.
The man nodded at this bit of wisdom as Martin sighed a bit. "My
first throw missed my target completely. I think my grip was
still shaken from holding the stone."

...Longbow Hunter... : Kardelen stared at the target in open
disbelief. “How?!” she exclaimed, laughter bubbling up as she
turned back toward Martin. The words she caught him exchanging
with the lane’s attendant only made her smile widen, pride
swelling warmly in her chest. More than anything, she wanted to
make her future Companion proud—and ever since their first Fair
together, with its archery contests and friendly rivalries, he
had kindled a competitive spark in her she hadn’t known she
possessed.
“I’m amazed myself, Sirs,” she said with a small, breathless
laugh as she shifted the final axe from one hand to the other,
settling it firmly into her right. She shook her blonde head,
the neat braids swaying with the motion, then stepped just
behind the line and stilled herself. At least the axes were
striking the target, she thought with relief. As a healer, the
idea of tending to someone she herself had wounded made her
stomach twist. That would be far more painful to her senses than
any missed throw.
She planted her feet, feeling the packed earth beneath her
boots, and drew her arm back. Inhale. Exhale. Aim— And then she
let the final axe fly.
