Issues with burning incense with charcoal

I've mainly been diffusing essential oils in the past and that's
still my preferred way to scent my home.
Recently, I decided to try burning incense on charcoal. I was
gifted a bag of rose scented frankincense and also got a big bag
of Ethiopian frankincense. So I looked up the instructions

/>got a cute brass burner and small round charcoals. I followed
the instructions and... turned my house into a smoke zone!
It was so smokey, I felt like I was in some kind of temple. I
could still smell the incense and it smelled nice, but the smoke
was too strong and overpowering. I was afraid my fire alarm
would go off any moment.
Was I doing something wrong? Any ideas on how to decrease the
smokiness?

I sometimes burn incense using charcoal. The charcoal blocks do
give off a lot of smoke when you first light them, but that
passes and they simply remain very hot but with no smoke.
When you put the incense on, that produces fragrant smoke, but
it should not fill your whole house! Maybe you put too much
incense on the charcoal at one time.
Try adding the incense in smaller amounts.
It is a lovely way to scent your home & I hope you will manage
to do it in a way that pleases you but does not overpower you or
set off smoke alarms!

@rositta said it all also make sure the charcoal is completely
grey ash when you put the stuff on it and then its the good
flavorful smoke.
make sure to let the smoke fill your closet up so your clothes
smell good too. I love oud/bakhoor! it will stay for days

It sounds like you've got the hard part down, getting the
charcoal to burn well. From there it should feel like a sensor
in a temple, but you can get away with a pretty light dusting of
incense and watching for if you need to add more. Most resins
will bubble and burn for awhile.

I prefer puttimg frankincense on a tin foil "bowl" and then
place it on the charcoal to eliminate smoke.
There is a youtube video to cover the benefit of using electric
burner.

Thank you for your suggestions! I probably do put too much
incense at once. I will try experimenting more with it.
