An Open Discussion About Steroids

I thought it would be interesting to have a candid discussion
about a topic everyone seems scared to talk about: steroids. I'm
interested in hearing what you think the pros and cons are
regarding your personal experiences with it. I personally have
never done it, but I don't think I'd be opposed if the
opportunity came to me. But that is my personal experimental
nature. I've experimented with a lot of drugs in my teens and
20s and can say positive and negative things about each. I've
had plenty of open discussions of various short and long term
effects of drugs and alcohol, but it seems people are afraid to
talk about steroids. It's like people who use them are ashamed
or are very secretive about it so they won't get judged by
others. So I'm hoping to open a non-judgmental and truthful
dialog here about it.

A friend of mine was asking me what I could find out about
steroids for him. I don't know what else he would want them for
except getting more "bulked up" as he works out at the gym. I
have never used them and I don't want to. They aren't legal for
everyone to use even though I've heard athletes and body
builders using them. Also there's side affects from taking them.
Probably other then looking up the subject on-line, talk to
someone that does body building and especially is a trainer.
That's how a friend of mine got some of his information on them.
(I don't know if this has to do exactly with the steroids that
athletes take, but I am currently taking or using a steroid
cream on my hands because they are in bad condition do to the
extreme dryness they get here. I'm afraid to go using it for too
long of time because I don't want some side affects from it. I'm
only suppose to use it for 2 weeks straight, but I had to go on
using it after a short break because my skin condition won't
clear up.)

I'm no expert, I can only tell you what little I know. My son
started working out his senior year of high school and mentioned
taking them to me and I told him absolutely NO. Anyway, once he
graduated he started taking them. He was thin and fit when he
started taking them and he did get very muscular but it came
with a big price. In order to maintain, you have to keep taking
them. When I found out he was taking them I begged him to stop
and he did then all of that muscle seemed to turn into fat. He
quickly went from fit and thin to overweight. It took him years
to get his normal metabolism back. Again, I am no expert, I am
only sharing what little experience I have.

I've never used them and never will. It's tempting and would
make my training easier and allow for faster recovery, but from
a clinical standpoint, I've seen what they do to your heart
(especially the ventricles), liver and kidneys.
I'm not here to judge. Do them if you want, but keep in mind the
damage you're doing. That's all I'm going to say.

I have an honest question here.
As an asthmatic, I take corticosteroids on a regular basis, for
pulmonary inflammation. When the asthma becomes acute, I have to
take tapering blast doses of Prednisone or injected Solumedrol,
and this is in addition to the maintenance corticosteroids
(specifically, Symbicort twice daily).
My question is, could the use of these corticosteroids cause
muscular changes like anabolic steroids are known to?
Please don't make fun of me, I seriously don't understand how
they can all be steroids but not all behave the same,
biochemically.
Thanks.
