Scents that cats can't stand?

I'd like to get a kitten, but I have leather funiture, and I
know that scratch posts don't always deter felines from clawing
other items in the house.
Since declawing is not an option in my book, I was wondering if
there are any smells that cats will generally try to avoid. I've
heard about citrus and orange peels. Do you have any
suggestions?

I had stray cats that would pee on my front porch furniture. I
was getting desparate and a friend suggested finding a "no
spray" spray you can find at PetSmart. It has a combination of
lemon oil and cinnamon oil, and deters the cats as well as
covering up the smell of urine. Fortunately, you don't have the
peeing issue! But, I used the stuff and found that it did seem
to deter them. I have to reapply about every 2 months or so.
It smells OK, like you'd imagine, as lemon and cinnamon are an
odd but not nasty combination. Not sure how good for leather,
though; maybe you could spray some pillows for on the couch?

Then again, I wonder if a cat would even approach me, since I
usually wear citrus scents! :D

My kitty (10 years young) loves citrus perfume scents!
Would you ever consider adopting an adult cat that has been
declawed? This may also go against your ideals, but it might be
mitigated by knowing that you have "rescued" an animal. This
will also guarantee that the leather furniture remains intact,
and the neighborhood birds are safe.

Bitter apple spray. Anything they scratch will get on their
claws, which they lick, and they absolutely hate the taste of
this stuff.
It's sold at Wal Mart. Grannicks Bitter Apple Spray.

We've used Bitter Apple for our cats, both to keep them from
chewing cords and scratching furniture. They REALLY don't like
that stuff!
