Career mode can be awesome (almost)

I don't know if any of you guys play offline much, but I thought
I'd share my approach to career mode, which I've been playing a
bit over the last couple of weeks. I've heard a lot of people
complain that it's too easy, so...
1. Expert mode. That means Legend AI and no assists at all. I
used to allow myself some flashbacks, but that gives you a
safety net that means you can push harder or go for a risky
overtake and hit rewind if it doesn't work out.
2. Default setup, apart from rear wing which I move from 6 to 8
to compensate a bit for the light rear end. Everything else I
leave alone. That means ARB, ride height, springs all on 6,
standard gearbox, etc. I run this setup in both dry and wet.
Getting round T8 at turkey with this is an interesting challenge
:) Running the default setup saves a lot of time as well, since
I don't have to worry about tweaking things during the practice
sessions.
3. Cockpit view. I find that this makes me a bit more cautious
in traffic, and it's just more realistic than the TV view.
4. Try to drive a realistic line. There are a lot of corners in
the game where you can take more kerb than you could in real
life. I try not to take advantage of that, since the AI cars
don't.
5. Don't defend too hard. The AI back out of overtakes very
easily, so if they have the line and the pace I let them have
the place.
6. Don't be a smart-arse with pitstop strategy. I go with the
strategy suggested by the race engineer. I sometimes stop a lap
early or late depending on race situation, but I never turn a 3
stop into a 2 stop for example.
7. Don't be too aggressive overtaking back-markers. This is just
to balance out how the AI drives. They are quite cautious, so if
you go aggressive you make up too much time during that phase of
the race.
Doing all the above gives me pretty realistic racing. If it's
still too easy you could lower the wings/springs. If it's too
hard, raise them, or turn on TCS if you want.
I'm in S2 at Ferrari. RB and Merc are the two strongest teams,
with Ferrari and Mclaren next. I find that I have to battle hard
to keep pace with the leading cars and that with default setup I
have similar straight line and cornering speed. I've done the
races upto Spain in S2 and it's been really enjoyable. The first
stint at Spain had Vettel, me and Webber in the top 3 (I
qualified on pole, but Vettel got past on lap 1), racing really
close, with none of us able to make a pass.
Great stuff, and you don't have to worry about lag, or nutters
ramming into you, like you do online.
But... (there's always a but) there are a few bugs I have no
workaround for.
- The leading drivers quite often retire with a puncture! It's
happened every race so far. e.g. my race in Spain was ruined by
both Vettel and Webber retiring, meaning that I won fairly
comfortably. It seems as if they just stay out too long on the
first stint, and don't take account of the tyre wear from the
quali laps. Same thing happened in Turkey, where schumi was
leading and retired with a puncture. Maybe this wouldn't happen
in GP mode if you skipped quali, but in career mode it's a real
problem.
- Occasionally the AI seem to be able to miss a stop altogether.
Button won in Australia by stopping only once, which shouldn't
be possible. To make things worse, all the other leading drivers
had punctures in that race!
- AI are too fast (for me anyway) on slick tyres in damp
conditions. They seem to be able to drive more or less like the
track is dry. This has only been a problem in Malaysia so far.
Even with the bugs, I still enjoy it. If they can get rid of the
tyre related bugs and make the setups more realistic, 2012 could
be really good.
