We at the Nerd HQ debate ad infinatum about the best movies, our
favourite movies etc, but we always come back to Empire. So...
is it the greatest movie ever? Or are we slightly... delusional?
Let it all out guys :)

It's by no means the greatest movie of all time, as that would
amount to eclipsing any number of genres outside of standard
sci-fi and it's never going to knock Welle's or Kurosawa off of
the top spots. One of the greatest bleakest moments in sci-fi
however, most definitely

Woohoo! A reply! lol... thanks mate. But surely, irrespective of
genres, it is still possible to choose THE greatest movie of
alltime? Not necessarily TESB but can such a title be awarded?

Neh. You'd literally be accounting for billions of different
tastes condensed into the thin apex of one genre, and that's
without arsey film critics climbing on their high horse with
Barry Norman as their patron saintly guide and calling you a
philistine for liking sci-fi. The greatest film can never be
attributed to one single genre, so I say thee NAAAAAY!! Not with
the likes of Marty Scorcese, Akira Kurosawa, Ang Lee, Ridley
Scott, Stanley Kubrick, Clint Eastwood, Francis Ford Coppolla or
Spielberg for that matter just waiting with a veritable
masterpiece feast with which to contend the title. If you were
to put it in the sci-fi genre it might stand a chance but with
stiff competition from the likes of Blade Runner, Alien(s),
Inception, Serenity, the Matrix, the Terminator, 2001 etc. all
vying for the top spot you'd still be being optimistic.

I'd say it's more accurate to say it's the most popular or
favourite film of all time.

As other have said you can't really measure, 'the best,' but to
be honest, I wouldn't put it in that category at all. It's a
good film, I like it a lot, but even in the sci-fi genre there
are films with tighter scripts that ask bigger questions.
Robocop and Dark City immediately spring to mind.

First off, Great Forum FTN, nice work:)
The Empire Strikes Back is the best out of all of the sta wars
films and it certainly does rank up among the best films ever,
but it is not THE best movie ever. Personally, i have a number
of personal best movies ever which include Godfather Parts 1 &
2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, A Bridge Too Far, Conspiracy,
Gandhi too name but a few. You'll note from some on my list
(which there are many more) that they eclipse a number of
genre's.
I really dont think there is a single Best Movie Ever though as
tastes change with repeated viewings. For me personally, one of
the signs of a truly great movie is that if its on tv, you'll
watch it even if you have the dvd.
