       Brandt and Schmidt had understood that one can defend peace and
       human rights only with one's own strength. We must not shorten

       As a leading power, Germany must vigorously push for a sovereign
       Europe. Germany can only be strong if Europe is strong. The
       history of the European Union has shown us everything that can
       be achieved when you want something and drive it politically.
       Schengen, the introduction of the euro, the historic Maastricht
       and Lisbon treaties or, more recently, the reconstruction after
       the coronavirus pandemic: all were high-impact decisions that
       improved our lives in Europe.
