Soren was quiet for a long moment, as he wrapped an arm around
the crying girl. "Demons........don't do things with reasons
involving kindness. They are always fighting with humans. Why
they went after the castle.....your parents.....I don't know the
reason. It's not fair.....but this won't be the end of it."

She sat there quietly for a few moments before a sudden thought
occurred "The staff?! It's still at the castle, we can't just
leave it there!" she said, somewhat happy to have an excuse to
return.

Soren sighed and shook his head. He stood up and walked over to
the few things he had brought. Picking up the fabric covered
object, he let a corner of the fabric fall away, revealing the
staff beneath it. "I took it on the way out Xia. It couldn't
fall into their hands.........its yours by right now"

She looked at the staff and shook her head, she rubbed the tears
from her eyes. "I...I wasn't supposed to get it like this. It
was gonna be some big ceremony, and I was gonna wear a stupid
dress." she sniffled softly. "I don't want it."

He sighed and sat back down next to her, setting the staff in
front of the two of them. "I know, it would have been a big
ordeal and you wouldn't have been able to sneak out. You would
have wanted to be out exploring instead of being in the dress."
He gave the smallest hint of a smile. "Whether you want it or
not Xia, the staff is yours now. No one else has the right to
it, its in your blood. You are going to need to wield it."

She glared at the staff "I don't even know how to fight, or use
it." she pouted, sighing softly.

He smiled lightly. "I will teach you how to fight. I'm good for
more than just keeping you safe you know. You will learn to use
the staff in time, its in your blood. I have faith that you
will wield it with grace."

She sighed again and picked up the staff, frowning at how heavy
it was and that she had to hold it with both hands. As she
touched it the jewel began to emit a light glow. She looked at
it in surprise before falling half closed in a trance "I can
feel moms presence." she mumbled and one of the crescents on the
curve of the staff began to glow. She placed her hand on it and
didn't flinch when it sliced the palm, she held her bleeding
hand over the jewel and as the blood fell on it the glow died
down and the blood vanished. The staff fell out her hands,
suddenly everything that happened caught up with her and she
slumped over in exhaustion and fell asleep.

Soren watched the ritual in silence. A sad smile crossed his
lips as she mentioned her mother. As soon as she slumped over,
his arms were there to catch her. Settling her down into a
comfortable position and he watched her sleep. He knew the
future held many trials, and life would not be easy for the
young heiress. But, he knew she was strong and he would be
there to do what he could.
