       1937-During the afternoon hours a “firemen’s special” train left
       Harrisburg bound for fire duty in Louisville, Ky.  The Ohio
       River was rampaging out of its banks and help was needed for
       flood and fire duty.  Seventeen paid firemen accompanied Fire
       Chief Earl Swartz along with the Friendship Engine No. 1 Ahrens
       Fox pumper.  Also on the train were eight men and a pumper from
       Lancaster, six men and a pumper from Wayne, six men and a pumper
       from Hampden, ten men and a pumper from Schuylkill County, six
       men and a pumper from Chester, nine men from Wilkes-Barre and
       twenty-five men and two pumpers from Reading.  En route the
       special would pick up more men from Erie and Greensburg.  During
       their stay they were quartered with several out of town
       companies and a large contingent of Philadelphia police in the
       American Tobacco Company warehouse on the west side.  In the
       eight days they were in Louisville, they helped fight several
       general alarm fires, recovered several bodies and worked in
       numerous flood duties.  The cold and tired smoke-eaters arrived
       back in Harrisburg on February 9th.  This is considered the
       longest mutual aid response in the city's history.
