1903-At around 11:15 a.m. what was believed to have been an
arsonist entering the shop of the carriage factory of Lewis
Heiges in Mechanicsburg and set fire to the building. Due to
the high winds and the amount of combustible material in the
building the fire took off and was beyond the capacity of the
Washington Engine Company and Rescue Hook and Ladder Company. A
call for assistance went to Harrisburg at 11:55 a.m. Fire Chief
George Lutz and the Goodwill Engine No. 7 hose carriage and
steamer were loaded up onto a flatcar and taken across the river
via the Cumberland Valley Railroad. Harrisburg firemen were in
service three hours. Nine dwellings, the three story carriage
factory, six stables, a blacksmith and shoemaker shop were
destroyed and or badly damaged in this conflagration. Overall
loss was fixed at $40,000.
