1868- 2:00 a.m. Smoke was discovered issuing from the three
story brick building occupied by the Franklin Iron Works,
Messrs. Jennings, Stoever and Stevenson, proprietors. The
location was at South and Short Streets (present location about
Commonwealth Ave and South Dr.) The building located on South
Street, a frame foundry and two-story frame pattern shop on
Short Street were entirely destroyed or badly gutted. The front
of the brick building collapsed into South Street and several
firemen narrowly escaped injury or death from the collapse.
Loss estimated at $30,000, partially covered by insurance.
Incendiarism listed as the cause.
