A 4-year-old Florida boy playing with a lighter started a fire
that burned down his family home, fire officials said. Everyone
escaped unharmed, but all the family's belongings were
       destroyed.
It took about 20 firefighters more than an hour to extinguish
the blaze Friday morning in West Melbourne, Fla.
Lt. Jeff Taylor, the spokesman for Brevard County Fire Rescue,
told AOL News today that the family is being helped by the Red
Cross and staying at a local hotel.
"Here it is Easter and now this. It's sad, very sad," family
friend Julia Dziegelewski told Florida Today. "But thank God
everyone's all right. And the good firemen, they knew what to
       do."
Although the house is owned by Roy and Shirley Shepherd, their
adult daughter Daphne Foley lived there with her family, the
       newspaper reported.
"This is just a tragedy for the whole family," Roy Shepherd
said. "We're just so glad everybody's OK, but they've lost
       everything."
The fire began when the boy set a mattress on fire in a front
bedroom while playing with a lighter. The fire quickly spread
through the one-story, wood-framed house, fire officials said.
Taylor said the house didn't have smoke alarms.
The child has been referred for counseling to the department's
Juvenile Fire Setters Program, designed to teach children about
the danger of fire, Taylor told AOL News.
