CHARLESTON, SC --
6:30 PM - The South Carolina Forestry Commission is working 24
active fires statewide with 40 units out in the field.
Local fire companies were also busy Monday. A volunteer with
the Eadytown Volunteer Fire Department in Berkeley County said
they worked at least 6 fires just today.
One of the larger brush fires in the Low Country started around
2pm along County Line Rd near the town of cross.
The fire started in Orangeburg County then jumped the roadway
into Berkeley County consuming more than 45 acres.
The SCFC says that fire was difficult to contain because of
rough terrain.
The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a Red Flag
Warning for the Lowcountry from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday.
There is also a Wind Advisory in effect which serves to enhance
the spread of wildfires.
According to meteorologists, strong winds will develop after
mid-morning and continue into the evening. That will combine
with low humidity levels of 30-35 percent to increase the
potential of wildfire development.

Firefighters across Spartanburg County are responding to
numerous brush fires today, with heavy winds creating the
potential for “explosive fire” growth.
A red flag warning has been issued for several Upstate counties,
including Spartanburg, and wind gusts of up to 35 mph are
creating “critical fire weather conditions,” according to the
National Weather Service.
Doug Bryson, Spartanburg County’s emergency management
coordinator, said 15 to 20 brush fires were in progress at about
2 p.m., adding, “They’ve got just about every (fire) department
tied up right now.”
The S.C. Forestry Commission reports that from Feb. 1 to Feb.
17, the agency responded to 226 fires statewide, and this past
weekend alone, agency workers responded to an additional 221
fires, raising the statewide total to 447 wildfires this month.
