nightclub fire

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (NBC) -- Sunday marked the eighth anniversary
of The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island -- one of the
nation's most deadly nightclub fires.
Survivors and relatives listened as the names of the 100 killed
in the fire were read. Crosses surrounded by snow serve as a
quiet memorial to those who were injured or lost their lives
after fire broke out during a rock show at the night club.
Mourners also paid tribute by observing 100 seconds of silence.
On February 20, 2003, fire ripped through the club after a
pyrotechnic display ignited soundproofing materials during a
performance by rock band Great White. Only as the fire reached
the ceiling and smoke began to billow did the packed crowd
realize something was wrong.
Fire officials said the club had three other exits, but people
couldn't see the signs through the smoke. Most of those who
perished did so while they were jammed up trying to get out
through the main entrance.
Fire officials said because the small wooden structure was built
before 1976, it was not required to have a sprinkler system. The
state has since pursued legislation to close that loophole, and
other states have looked at their laws concerning the use of
indoor fireworks.
At the time, it was the deadliest fire in the United States
since 1977 and the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S.
history. The worst American nightclub fire was in 1942 in
Boston's Cocoanut Grove, where 492 people
