       1952-Sometime after 8.00 a.m. workmen were using a cutting torch
       in the vicinity of the refrigeration rooms of the closed
       Graupner Brewery at Tenth and Market Streets.  The torch ignited
       the thick cork and pitch in the rooms.  The workmen tried to
       extinguish the fire but the thick smoke made the area untenable.
       A phone call was made to City Hall for the fire department to
       respond.  Fire Chief Earl Swartz then called the Mt. Pleasant
       Engine No. 8 and the Washington Hose No. 4 to respond on a local
       alarm at 8:55 a.m..  Arriving companies found heavy smoke
       showing.  Chief Swartz then ordered his driver three minutes
       later to Cameron and Market and “hook” Box 191.  The second
       alarm was struck at 9:04 followed seven minutes later by the
       general alarm.  I’m sure all hands worked for quite a while in
       the thick acrid smoke to bring this difficult fire under
       control.  No loss was given.
       The Graupner Brewery, founded in 1892 by German brewer Robert
       Henry Graupner, was located near the corner of 10th and Market
       Streets. The brewery underwent several renovations and stayed in
       business during prohibition by producing near-beers and soft
       drinks. When prohibition was repealed in 1932, the brewery
       returned to making beer and ale. The last Graupner’s beer was
       delivered to retailers on May 14, 1951, with the last ale
       delivered the following day. The Graupner Brewery was condemned
       in March 1961, and razed the following month.  The brewery was a
       large imposing brick building.  Today this area is a surface
       parking lot adjacent to the old Main Post Office.
