[b]The Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) released an
open letter on Thursday written by a police officer concerning
the recent gun ban that was put into place by the Liberal
       government through an order-in-council.
The officer is writing from a "western province in a major
municipality” and works in a specialty team partly focused on
gang crime. The officer owns several guns and is concerned about
the way the Liberal government cut through legislation without a
parliamentary debate and acted as if it was "above our
       parliamentary system."
"This is an open letter about being on the right side of history
and doing the right things for the right reasons. That goes for
both us and the government," the letter reads. "It is important
to always keep in mind that governments, politicians and
partisan ideologies come and go. We serve the people of Canada.
We are not a tool of the minority government waiting to do its
bidding, ready to trample over the Charter rights of the
citizens of Canada and seize legally obtained property in the
hands of innocent men and women."
The ban was announced on military-grade "assault-style" weapons
in Canada shortly after the mass shooting that took place in
Nova Scotia on April 18-19, resulting in a total of 22 deaths
and three injuries. The ban does not allow gun owners to sell,
import, transport or use the guns.
"If the official opposition or the Canadian courts don’t undo
this decision, police members in Canada as well as other parts
of the legal system will be involved in breaching the Section 8
Charter rights of law abiding Canadian citizens when we are
involved in the unlawful seizures of privately owned property,"
the letter continues. "All of these actions will be carried out
because a small group of people in a minority government decided
that they were above our parliament and our courts."
The officer also encourages people who believe that this action
should be stopped by the government and that more focus should
be placed on criminals to write letters of their own and
anonymously send them to the CCFR.
"We need to make our voices heard. We are the professionals in
public safety, we are the ones who run towards the criminals
with the guns, we are the ones who must speak the truth," reads
the letter. "Sincerely, a concerned colleague and Canadian
       citizen."
