Although the combination of several governments ordering the
release of strategic oil reserves and the confinement in
Shanghai3eased pressure in April and much of May, even markets
less directly affected by supply constraints came under
pressure: in mid-April, US natural gas prices, despite the
country being largely Measured isolated from international
dynamics, they reached their highest level since the peak of the
last commodity boom in 2008. Rising energy prices quickly
translated into rising food and fertilizer prices.

connecting some of the planet's most
fertile farmland to the rest of the world and Russia's
fertilizer exports, so these markets have also had to absorb

With the need to preserve dollars for essential food and fuel
imports, Sri Lanka suspended interest payments on its external
debt on April 13. In mid-May, Sri Lanka's new prime minister,
Ranil Wickremesinghe, who came to power after unrest forced his
predecessor to resign, admitted to his compatriots how dire the
country's economic outlook was. Warning that “the next two
months [would be] the most difficult of our lives,” he explained
that the country's foreign exchange reserves had been decimated,
that gasoline and medicine would run out, and that long daily
power outages were inevitable.
