Ed committed suicide once he realised the forces of chaos had
claimed the relay for themselves... So he nuked the relay and
himself in the process...
And we went for a stroll in the desert till we found this
place...

Right so:
Upon investigation by the imperium, the members of the secretive
ordo Relays were determined to be heretics, and so were
sentenced to death. The Vault guard raided the place and killed
a few, but most were off fighting. The chapter master Erasmus
Damocles managed to warn us in time to leave, but he himself was
declared a heretic and beheaded.
Many of us fled onboard the metalus gravus, to beyond even the
ghoul stars themselves and to a backwater world. A small shack
and a few industrial facilities were quickly built... but little
progress has been made.

Yes, that seems appropriate.
Perhaps we should do an RP related to this?
An idea anyway, might be a good kick-start for the RP threads.
