The avenging angel- prologue
The nobles of house Agenta sat around the giant oak table, smoke
from the cigars clogged the air in a thick mist of nicotine. The
men and women shouted and argued with each other in a loud
cacophony since the most recent “disaster”. At the head of the
table a thin, sickly man eyed the sigil of the house that sat
above the table, finely engraved in gold’s and blues into the
shape of a horned rose. One of the nobles shouted at the man,
her face red and distressed ‘Uriel what are we to do, William is
missing and Sejanus is a headless corpse that is still impaled
on the church tower… Uriel…Uriel are you listening!’ with a sigh
Uriel grunted with effort as he stood on his feet ‘men and women
of house Agenta, I call for peace so that we may resolve this
issue’ Uriel raised his hands to calm the nobles “An issues?
Sejanus is dead, my son is dead!” the sickly man made a wheezy
cough as he spoke ‘calm down, Sejanus knew the risks, we all
did. We signed the deal with the devil now we pay the price’ the
sound dropping to a dead silence as Uriel spoke of the pact ‘now
we know who is coming for us, yes, it is no man. Nor is it
alien, it is an Astarte. And we cannot call for help from the
rest of the realm of Ultramar; this is an issue that must be
faced by us. Now any suggestions?’ the glass outside the window
caving into a milliard of shattered glass fragments, the rain
from outside pouring in as one solitary figure stood in the door
frame.
The midnight blue broken up by streaks of lightning, the bat
winged skull sigil born on his shoulder pad, steam wafted from
the rebreather of his skull engraved helm, his blood red lenses
glinting in the dark. The giant strode from the window, glass
crunching under the armored boots of the stranger; the nobles
starred at the warrior with open mouths, shock played over their
grief stricken faces. The night lord took of his helm with a
hiss of gasses letting his long mattered hair flow from the
tight space of the helmet, the pale white flesh of the thing’s
face pulled back into a sadistic grin, revealing filed fangs
below. ‘Well looks like we have a full house’ the words from the
giant were death personified through those thin, grinning lips.
One of the noblemen yelled out at the stranger ‘who are you, we
will get the guards on you’. The stranger made a chesty laugh
that drowned all who heard it in a feeling of unease ‘I’m an
entertainer, good sir, and you will not have to worry about the
guards, they are taken care of. Much like you loved William’ the
woman from before screeched at the news of the boy ‘William,
where is my William!’ she beckoned.
The long coat trailed behind the stranger as he walked towards
the woman, the rain and wind picking up as he did so. The giant
bent low with a thud of his thick armor crunching into the
wooden floor, he grasped the hand of the woman and brought it to
his mouth, kissing it in a mockery of old customs, his large
pupils looking unnatural on the pale human face ‘my dear you
must calm down, he is with me, safe from the virus of this city’
the woman looked confused as she retracted he hand half in
disgust ‘Where is he?’ she whispered. The stranger with a
grimace took off his cloak and threw it to the woman who almost
fell of the chair, soon her confusion turned to horror as she
stared into the skinned face of her dear William. The stranger
seemed to revel in it as he energetically tossed a bloody sack
to Uriel ‘the rest of your friend, Sejanus, a real squealer he
was’.
The noble family’s all jumped up in fright as they knew who he
really was, the terror that had been plaguing the city for
decades, The night flayer, the men and women all ran for the
door but found the doors unable to budge, the cackles of the
night flayer struck fear into the hearts of all present ‘I told
you I was an entertainer, a very personal one’.
1- The eternal watch
Varion- Black Templar: champion
Estaldor- Raven guard: scout
Ultamis- Iron hands: specialist
Decimus- Imperial fist: tactical
Skrall- Night lords: Terror squad
The lander rocked and shuddered as it touched ground onto the
dark, corroded metal of hive Ajakas, rain and sleet pounded the
hull of the ship and evaporated as it made contact with the hot
engines of the deathwatch marked vessel, the sigil of the order
wrought in cold iron on the ramp doors. Ten men in military
dress uniform approached the vessel through the thunderstorm and
waited patiently as the hydraulics hissed and the doors lowered
to the starkly lit bay. Four black-armored giant strode out of
the lander with mechanical precision, each bore the deathwatch
honors on one arm and shoulder pad while their other held their
chapter’s colors and heraldry. The leader was the last to
disembark, his posture and movements easily identifying him as
such, the glowing red lenses shimmered in the rain as their glow
sat stark on their black armor, the leader looked down at one of
the dress uniform solders with the most brass on him ‘where are
your officials?’ the giant demanded, his tone impeccant and full
of strength.
The man craned his neck up with his damp bearskin cap weighing
and unbalancing his head ‘M’I lord’ were all that’s left of the
top chain military and police forces’ the commander said, the
space marine scanned the other nine men with his helmets red
lenses ‘What happened to the rest commander?’ the marine asked.
Silence fell on the men as they looked down in what seemed like
effort, trying to hide their fear from the warrior. The solider
eventually replied with a sorrowful voice ‘their all dead lord,
all of them’. The Giant tensed as he thought over the
information ‘let us go inside’ the marine commanded as he walked
through the morbid arrival party, the rest of the squad
shadowing their commander, squad voxing him as they entered the
building.
Decimus was the first to speak, his deep, course voice a dead
give away even without the call sign popping up on Varion’s
visor screen ‘This is bigger than we were debriefed on’ said the
imperial fist ‘it has been 2 months, 3 weeks, 8 days, 14 hours
and 22.4 seconds since we left for this mission’ blurted
Ultramis the bitter ring of the words common amongst his chapter
‘what ever is happening it is more than house rivalry, its
systematic execution by the looks of it’ the voice of Estaldor,
no warmth to his tone. Varion replied to the squad through his
thick, clipped tone ‘lets complete the mission ordered,
questions later’.
Inside the building their was the sounds of men talking and
walking around in makeshift bunker but as the Astarte’s walked
in the men fell dead silent, Decimus even helmed looked
underwhelmed, a talent that he was very proficient with ‘any
real attack could smash through this sad gathering’ he said
plainly to the officers and guardsmen who tried to avoid eye
contact. The commanding officer took off his cap with a sigh of
relief, turning around before standing at attention once again,
his face showing that he was just entering his late twenty’s
‘lord’s I will debrief you on the current situation down here in
the hive as quickly as I can before… The night flayer arrives’
the mans face going pale as he spoke the last words, Varion
grunted ‘Night flayer?’ The commander grimaced once again ‘yes
sir, that is the name we have given to the… Thing that had been
decimating the high up hierarchy by the dozens, we have lost 80%
of our command structures, the rest are in hiding in orbit with
the best protection the planet could provide’ the man nodded to
one of the fellow officers who held the vox caster set high
‘Before I leave to my duty’s the rest of the information will be
uploaded into your suits systems, I trust you know what your
doing, The emperor protects’ the officer made the sign of the
Aquila, Estaldor grumbled ‘power armor helps’.
The squad quickly started to move as they set to the task
Ultamis blurted out his statistics and probability’s ‘The
concentrations of this night flayer are set up near the
cathedral and manufactoriums complex’ Varion grunted in
acceptance ‘Estaldor and me will look through the cathedral,
Ultamis and Decimus will go through the manufactoruims and sweep
the area for traces of this traitor, we will find him’ Estaldor
cut in ‘and if we don’t?’ Varion stopped and looked down on the
scout, a head taller ‘than he has killed himself in some ditch
out a fear of judgment from the emperors angels’, Varion slowly
turned to make sure that his point was known but was brought to
a halt by the screaming of a guardsmen, followed by a concussive
boom. The squad rounded the corner and came face to face with
the nigh flayer, bolters leveled. A giant knelt at the breach
from the bunker into the storm behind him. Long, mattered black
locks flowed from under his helm onto his broad armored
shoulders and back. The traitorous night lord insignia sat on
his shoulder plate and the lightning cracks that scoured his
armor told the squad who he was ‘NIGHT LORD!’ Varion boomed as
he withdrew his two-handed power sword from his back with the
rattle of chains that suspended the now hot white, glowing
weapon. The night lord’s breath came out in a hot steam that
rose from his rebreather ‘That is not my name Varion’ The black
Templar loosening his grip on his sword in confusion ‘how do you
know who I’m’ Varion barked in anger ‘I have many names now
Varion. Traitor, Night flayer, night lord but none call me
Skrall. How many do you have. Bezerker, animal, Murderer or is
it Varion’ the black templar gritted his teeth and charged
forward ‘Die traitor’ he snarled, the night lord leaping out
into the dark depths below as rain continued to belt down,
Varion roared in anger ‘I will find you and bring you back as a
trophy’.
Decimus tapped the black Templar on the shoulder and pointed
down at the head of the commanding officer, the word ‘Murderer’
carved into the forehead. Varion with a surge of rage kicked the
head with an armored boot that sent the head spiraling bellow.
Varion took in deep breaths in an attempt to calm down ‘we stick
to the plan, we find this traitor and take his head for the
chapter’ the words ringing in the rainfall.
