Name: Cullius Rofen
Age: 22
Sex: male
Assigned: Trojanus V hive city- Morium PDF
Rank: private first class
The APC kicked and shook with every pothole on the dirt trail
out of the towering city of iron and smoke. Cullius sat in the
troop transport bay; the ride was quiet so far, apart from the
odd smoldering cigarette or nervous breathing of a trooper.
Calius held a cigarette in his shaking hand, the ash falling to
the deck, he tried to take another puff of the nicotine filled
cigarette taking much effort to keep it steady in his shaking
hands and when he finally took a long breath of the addictive
chemical smoke and let out a sigh to calm himself. With his
other shaking hand Cullius wiped a bead of sweat that had
gathered on his brow and he looked back down to his rifle, the
M35 M-Galaxy pattern lasgun was rusty and covered in a layers of
half dry mud and on closer inspection had much wear and tear on
the firing mechanisms. ‘This bloody thing looks like its ready
to fall apart’ Callius angrily thought to himself as he rested
the butt of the rifle on the rusting, iron decking of the APC
and went to loosen the collar on his uniform and found his
fingers pushing through a sizable hole near his throat ‘bullet
hole, from the last unlucky bastard who wore this bloody
uniform’ looking down Callius saw the red stain of some sorry
sods dried life blood near the tear in the thick, olive green
cloth ‘Emperor’ he whispered. Only a week ago Callius had been a
poor worker in a foundry but now he was given a dead mans
uniform and old gun that looks like it was going to fall any
moment from now. Callius’s thoughts were disrupted when he heard
a yell from the vox bead he had attached to his ear “CONTACT
EAST!” is all, the vox bead spewed into Cullius’s ear and then
the world suddenly flipped upside down into pitch black.
Cullius stood up in the now pitch black APC, pain shooting from
his back when he landed on one of the metal support beams, he
felt a trickle of blood seep into his olive green coat. Confused
he looked around for anyone else calling out the few names that
he knew in his squad “Jordian, Romulus, Tor!” Searching through
the APC his eyes finally adjusted and he found Jordian, eyes
rolled into the back of his skull and a large piece of shrapnel
sticking out from his chest. Cullius fell to his knees and
vomited bile on the metal decking. ‘Shit, shit, shit!’ he yelled
as he stood back up, clutching his rifle and trying to find a
way out. Out side he could hear a fire fight going on, men dying
and yelling to the drum beat of auto, bolter and las rifles.
Fumbling along the walls of the APC Cullius finally found the
metal door and heaved it open, he fell out and sat, dumbfound
and confused as the firefight played out. Propped up against the
APC, Tor tried to hold in his guts, his teeth gritted as blood
covered his tattooed hands “GET UP SOILDER!” the voice was firm
and gravely. Turning Callius looked at the grim features of
sergeant Romulus, the veteran’s face scowled as he picked me up
but the scruff of my uniform “Start shooting solider!” he
bellowed as he shoved my dropped rifle into my hands and
continued to brace his bolter on the overturned APC and fire
into the rocky hill side. Suddenly the rifle felt like it was
now made of lead in my arms as I braced myself against the side
of the APC and took a deep breath ‘Emperor save me’ I whispered
as I aimed to the hill side and with the reticle I saw the
outline of a enemy solider. The grey rags wrapped the figure all
over leaving no skin to be shown, his face covered by a leather
mask, each one was made by the rebels to represent one of their
traitorous gods minions. The solider knelt on the side of the
hill and was reloading his auto rifle. Cullius froze as he
started to squeeze the trigger, he did not know why but he could
not bring himself to shoot the heretic.
The man looked directly at him now, rifle pointed and Cullius
finally pulled the trigger as his finger slipped. He jolted from
the small amount of recoil and saw through the reticle the man’s
chest explode and blood spray the surrounding dead soil and
shrubs. Steam rose from his corpse as the las bolt’s heat
started to cool down after smoldering his flesh. Cullius quickly
ducked as he tried to come to terms with what he had just done,
he felt sick and heaved again. Bile flowed from his stomach and
the gunfire started to die down as the surviving heretics were
surrounded and captured. Cullius held his las rifle loosely in
one hand as he trudged through the dead soil; He looked around
the firefight and saw what had happened in a mere five-minute
battle. The convoy of three APCS was down to one functional APC,
19 of sergeant Romulus’s men were killed while 29 of theirs were
piled up at the base of the hill, we had captured 5 of them and
they were held at the base of the hill. Their masks and weapons
taken I could see their faces, fear and grief is all I saw. Not
the barbaric savagery Culius was told to expect, in the pile of
there dead Cullius could see the man I had shot. His face was
young, only 16 or 19 at most, Cullius felt sick again and sat
down. The captured heretics looked at me with fear as I turned
my head I was looking directly into Tor’s eyes, no life was
harbored their any more and one of the bravest men I knew was
now dead, trying to hold onto his life and entrails for a dead
apothecary that would never come.
Anger built up inside of cullius and he dropped the rifle,
unsure of what to think or feel. Tears began to well up in his
eyes and Cullius sat back feeling like giving up ‘I cannot win’
he told the lifeless cadaver ‘If I fight I kill more boys, if I
do not I lose more friends’. Cullius closed Tors blank eyes ‘you
can rest friend, your duty has ended now’. Romulus walked over
to one of the men standing over the restrained prisoners ‘what
have you found Trumn’. The solider snapped to attention ‘they
are not part of the arch enemy hordes sir. They are bandits
playing dress up, most likely trying to get by with the wars
depression going on’. The sergeant looked down at the group of
men, then his gaze fell upon the laid out line of his dead ‘well
we can’t have bandits running around’. He mercilessly pointed
his bolter to the defenseless men and fired, churning up the men
and soil ‘we move out, we still have an outpost to reinforce’.
Cullius looked up to the red and black stained sky, the smoke of
imperial production mixing with plasma coolant of the hundreds
of dead and dying ships in combat million of kilometers above
him ‘Emperor, preserve us’ he whispered and he swore he saw a
glint of silver coming in from one of the clouds of ash.
