Power in blood
Tell me sago of your childhood’ the voice smooth as silk
‘Darkness, disease, death… These are the three things I spent my
child hood in, these are the things my family were forced into,
toiling in the dark form birth to death, mining for precious
minerals and rocks at the cost of millions of enslaved
innocents!’ the snarl of the warrior seemed to unnerve the woman
in the psychic connection as the large fruit trees and rolling
grassy plains shuddered back into the dark memory’s of the
butcher king, the screams and wails of the dead and dying as he
felt his way through the dark caverns. But slowly and gracefully
the woman calmed Segovax back into the hills ‘do you remember
before the dark Sago’ Segovax growled as he calmed his ridged
nerves ‘it’s fuzzy Amroet, blurry’ the woman was struggling as
she picked her way through his memory’s Until she found what she
was looking for.
“Do you know why the sky is red?” the voice deep, but
compassionate “Isn’t it Rak’s blood filling the sky dad?” the
reply full of innocence “Yes Son he betrayed his family, a crime
that no punishment can redeem” The child smiled as he looked up
from the grassy hill to the setting sun, the breeze blowing
through his short, black hair. Slowly his face degraded back
into the sorrowful gaze ‘Dad, do you have to go fight. Why can’t
you stay’ a tear forming at the corner of the child’s eye as he
rolled over looking at the bushy bearded face of his father ‘you
know why, we must defend our home from the invaders. This
“Emperor” wants to rule over us and I must do the right thing,
the honorable thing’. The child continued to cry as his father
embraced him ‘Remember to look after your little brother for me
while I’m gone, family is the one thing you can put faith in
when all else has abandoned you’. The father gave his son one
finale kiss on his forehead and stood back up, his dark grey
uniform flapping in the gathering gale of wind, the man gave his
son a salute before smiling and jumping in the back of one of
the military trucks, the last sight of his father the boy will
ever see as the dust settled and the massive ships in the sky
came into focus. ‘Segovax’.
Segovax woke to the bark of his wearily faced Mordred, “the
Master of iron” the warp smith’s face ending in a slab of ugly
pig iron, the jaw forged to repair the missing jaw that he lost
to a loyalist bolter on Terra. ‘Segovax we are approaching the
Ultramar sector, we expect resistance’. The simple and blunt
thinking is why Segovax liked him, aside from being of the world
eater legion Segovax did not care for confusing words and terms,
he liked simple but effective words just as how he liked his
fighting. Segovax nodded to the cyborg he held one of his bionic
arms to his chest, the wrists fixed with extendable chain blades
making his hands into two bulky chain fists, they whirred as he
stood up and left the chamber.
Segovax cracked his neck as he got up from his bed with a groan
of protest from the metal frame. Ever since Amoret, the
butcher’s nails no longer plagued him as she nullified the
effects and soothed his pain as long as he kept close to her.
Segovax walked across his bare metal room to Amoret stayed;
rudely he opened the door with no knock and looked inside at
Amoret starring back at him in her plain black robes that
matched here dark eyes ‘We will be fighting soon’ Segovax
grunted to her as he stood bare chested in the room, she gave a
weak smile ‘of course Sego, we are almost home aren’t we?’ she
soothingly asked. Segovax nodded but his eyes grew dark as he
turned to leave ‘my name isn’t Sego, its Segovax, Sego’s dead’
he left her before Amoret could respond, donning his crimson and
brass war plate he made his way to the bridge of the ship,
meeting a few mutant crew who cowed in the shadows making him
sick with their fear and cowardice.
On the bridge Segovax could see the advancing fleet of the
ultramarines, the tight formation gathering speed as they
intercepted the traitor fleet ‘they out number us’ hissed Skrall
his holographic image fluttering and bathing the bustling bridge
with a low blue, the night lords skull faced helm at his side,
his face half skinned leaving a sinuous mess of half repaired
flesh on his once handsome features ‘Quiet coward, we can
butcher every single one of these mortals with ease’ the
thunderous reply of Gorog drawing the poisonous glare of Skrall
‘Silence, the both of you’ growled Segovax as he sat on his
brass throne, skulls and weapons melted into the command throne
giving it a threatening and abnormal appearance. The presence of
the butcher king unnerving the night lord and many of the crew,
Segovax pointed a single armored claw to the hololiphic display
of the enemy fleet ‘they out number us by 10 to our 5, they out
gun us with their freshly crafted weapons from Mars, but they
have one disadvantage that we will use to their deaths… Their
foolishness’ the metallic skull faced helm of the warlord
unmoving from the snarling that it was encased in crimson iron
and cerimite.
Mordred broke the silence as his jaw clicked and grinded with
his words ‘their fleet has drifted from support range of the
rest of the fleet, only leaving their main ships ahead of the
pack, and their close packed formation make them impossible to
miss’ Skralls face slowly twisted into a disturbing grin.
Segovax lower his hand and started to bark orders to the crew as
he thirsted for the destruction of the fleet ‘all crew prepare
void shields and missile battery’s along with the Vulcan mega
bolters, I want this to get bloody’.
The dark apostle walked out from the shadows, his peppered long
beard and once tanned now leathery skin a testament to how old
he now was ‘My lord, we of the word shall prepare the “dark
engine” for boarding?’ Divanthos, the old man was leaning on a
metal staff that ended in the eight-pointed star of the gods.
Segovax slowly nodded to the word bearer who gave a slight smile
from his deep black hood as he lead his disciples to the heart
of the prison ship. The four imperial ships were at their top
speeds as they gleefully sped towards the raider fleet ‘To their
deaths’ Segovax growled as he made his way to Amoret who sat on
a comfortable seat far away from most of the crowd on the
bridge, he knelt to eye level before removing his helm to show
his unshaven face, looking much healthier than before ‘are you
ready?’ he asked as politely as he could, Amoret held the giant
face of Sego in her hands ‘I have to be don’t I’ she replied
before laying her arms to her sides as she began to channel her
true power, a single trickle of blood forming from her nose,
Sego pulled his gauntlet off wiping the blood away with a cold
hand that forced Amoret to give a low whimper.
Around the bridge eyes saw this and watched in confusion but
would never dare to voice their concerns. The mutant ship
master, a horned goat man grunted a warning to the butcher king
‘Ships within firing range lord, their void shields are still
online and primed’ Segovax got up and looked out into the vast
space where in the distance he could see the four dots that held
the power to tear this ship into the void without a second
glance ‘the ships are preparing to fire their lance battery’s,
in 3…2…’ suddenly a massive flash of light erupted in the
darkness near the ships ‘FORWARD, AT FULL SPEED!’ bellowed
Segovax he turned around to Mordred ‘get the red butchers ready
and in pods, we have blood to spill’ Mordred nodded as he
thundered down the hall way to the deepest decks of black ship.
Turning his gaze to Skrall he could see the night lord sitting
on a similar throne of still living men, flayed alive they
silently screamed in pain and insanity as their voice boxes
having long been taken and fed to the flesh hounds ‘get your
ship into skirmishing, destroy the shields and we will do the
rest’ the night lord smirked as he commanded his men into
position before cutting off the hololithic link.
Segovax grabbed Gorlog and pulled him aside ‘prepare the
Bezerkers and the boarding pods, we have work to do’ Gorlog
bearded his teeth in a supposed smile as he sprinted to the
lower decks. Picking up his chain axe with a rattle of chains as
he chained it to his fore arms Segovax stood by the side of
Amoret ‘I will return’ he whispered as he resealed his helm and
left the bridge giving one last order ‘follow out the battle
plan mutant filth, or I will return to your rolling heads’.

The air was cold and stale with the stink of the dead and
diseased always present in the dark, the moans of the slaves
were a constant droan and after a while it is hard to tell who
is moaning anymore who is alive and who is dead? You and me is
disorientated as your senses are reduced so much in the mining
pits that you lose yourself in if you’re not careful. I keep
myself in a small corridor area where I work the mining shaft
and ferry the dust and rock back to the surface. The only other
outside sensation I know of is the crack of the whip from the
guards, their black armor and night vision hiding them so that
we are unable to see, making revolts much harder and near
impossible from the sadistic grim reapers in the dark. The one
who patrols around me laughs as he walks by, it confuses me but
I continue to work for an uncountable amount of days or even
months, was I still 11? My stomach grumbles as I work, my
rations barely keeping me alive as I start to lose hope for my
family’s return.
The tunnels roar with fighting my instincts tell me to run and
hide like the others but I feel an emotion that I had not used
in a long time, rage. It fills my body as my heart beats and
drives my blood through me; I pick up my pickaxe and wait. The
roaring of gunfire, dying and angry men turn into a roar
lighting up the passage way with flashes of muzzles that give my
eyes the first flashes of light I had seen since my capture. The
pickaxe is heavy in my hands but I hear a man run by me, I swing
the pickaxe in a wide arc with a snarl. The tip of the axe finds
its way into the back of the mans leg, bone and cartilage
snapping as he tumbles to the floor, his screams only feeding
the anger I feel ‘this is for my family’ I rasp to him as I tear
the pick axe from his ruined leg, I once again slammed the pick
axe into the mans chest, the armor caving in as the tip pierces
his rib cage, blood spurts out onto my face and I hear him beg
for his life. I once again dislodge the pickaxe from him and
slam it into him, again and again until he stops shaking and
breathing. I can taste the metallic tang of his blood in my
mouth and smell the piss in his pants, as his body died and lost
control of it’s self.
A light at the far end of the corridor blinds me as a giant
encased in white and blue armor, I weakly tear the pick axe from
the dead guard and prepare to fight the stranger as my body
shakes from the effort. The light of the stranger dulls as my
eyes adjust to the light and the giant walks forward, the
strides of the giant’s armor shudder the shafts walls, freeing
dust into the air as his weight shakes the ground. He stands in
front of me, his face no longer hidden by the dark, his
predatory gaze took my heart and ground it into dust as he stood
before me ‘you fight well child’ he said bluntly, his accent
thick and other worldly, I was lost for words as I looked into
the cold eyes of the giant ‘who are you?’ I manage to reply. The
man had many scars that shifted as his skin pulled itself into
grimace, my child like curiosity spiked, as did my instinct to
run and hide ‘are you a soilder?’ I asked, the giant replied
with a single cold line ‘I’m a butcher of worlds, no more, no
less’. I drop my pickaxe, feeling no need for the weapon, as it
would do little against the demi god of battle in front of me
‘well what should I call you butcher?’ I ask, his eyes for a
split second seem to widen with some emotion or memory, but
quickly it dissolves back into the stern gaze that threatens to
crack stone ‘name is Kharn, boy, Kharn of the world eater
legion’ I see his right shoulder plates insignia, a toothed
mouth devouring a world.
The warrior begins to walk away with the thud of his armored
boots against the bloody soil ‘My name is Sego’ I call out as I
take a step to follow him ‘you need to help me find my family’ I
beckon. Kharn stops in his tracks as he half turns to me over
his back ‘Your family never left you’ he continued to walk down
the corridor, throwing a flare behind him to land in front of me
revealing the horrible truth. Three corpses sat infront of me,
my fathers military tattoo still on his decaying cheek, it was
their coughs and sputters for help in the dark. Tears threaten
to rain from my eyes as I fall to my knees, unable to vomit from
lack of food in my malnutrition form. I do not feel pain,
sadness of fear as they are swept away by a more primal emotion.
Rage. I beat the rocky floor with my fists till they bleed ‘I
will kill them all!’ I roar. Kharn continues to walk away ‘If
you wish revenge follow me, but you are no longer Sego. You are
Segovax, a butcher like the rest of us’.
