“To die for the emperor is the reward for the honored, to burn a
heretic is for the weak”- Reavers motto
The air was cold and dusty in the dark claustrophobic corridors,
the only sound present in the pitch black being the hum of my
power pack. The seemingly endless corridors were bathed in a
light green from the lens of my helmet, and that coupled with
augmented sight and other senses in loaded by the power armor I
wore, banished the darkness leaving the thing here no chance to
hide in the shadows. He could smell it now, its distinct sent
was almost overpowering and left a metallic tang in my mouth
that grew stronger with every step of cerimite-armored boot.
There was no need to hide from it for it already knew where I
was; it was just weighing risk to reward for attacking me. Such
are the daemons of slanessh, this particular daemon was a
scavenger not a hunter or warrior and so hated open conflict
with things its size. But I knew better than to hunt it through
the entire building so I head for the most common nesting area
with a flamer in hand, this daemons hatred of combat is only put
down by the animalistic instinct to protect their gods
interests.
I look at my display inside of my helm, 30 meters to the most
likely hive point. I raise the flamer, its weight assures me as
the igniter flame on the end glows a white hot, blue flame that
hisses with burning gas. In my other hand I hold my chain sword,
the finely detailed and crafted weapon showing battles from the
chapters past that this blade has taken part in. As I close in
on the hive I hear it skittering and rasping behind me, the hive
is a massive gelatinous mass containing eggs that on closer
inspection are made of hollowed human skulls. I raise my flamer
as I clench the chain weapon so tightly the metal begins to
groan under the pressure.
I hold down the trigger of the flamer and feel the heat sensors
of my armor relaying the information the daemon yells a high
pitch squeal as its offspring begin to melt and burn, I turn and
ready myself for the coming battle. The Daemon has the look of a
giant carrion bird with no eyes but threes slits on its smooth
and unnatural beak, its filthy feathers begin to shed during its
flight to kill me. I duck and parry its animalistic pecks and
rasping claws as it screeched a bone-shaking caw. Deaths of the
daemon, cleansing of the soul I remember as my memories with the
chaplains of my company begin to kick back in gear.
The Daemons nostrils flare as it lands and begins to crawl
around on its folded wings and claws, as its long serpentine
tongue begins to rake the air, I quickly counter attack Its spit
is highly toxic, even to us. The chain blade makes an angry
growl as it swiftly tears the fleshy tongue in a spray of toxic
blood and saliva. I back away as the Daemon begins to buck and
panic. Now with no ranged weapon I raise my flamer and fire
another burst of promethium onto the warp fiend and it starts to
run across the room in a frantic attempt to put out the
promethium. When it falls dead inches from the nest I begin to
ease up from the daemon kill and I sling the flamer across my
shoulder as I begin to decapitate the daemon as a trophy.
“But I hear something else, too small to be another daemon.
Bipedal by the sound, light on its. No their feet, five targets
to the right”. I stand up from the ruined corpse of the daemon;
the stench of tainted blood and rotting flesh almost unbearable
if not for the air filters built into my helmet. The five
figures are humans but far from imperials, demonic symbols and
traitorous words cover their makeshift leather armor and auto
rifles.
I step over the dead warp spawn and with my free hand wipe some
of the acidic blood from the chain blade and start to drawn two
fingered runic symbols onto my purple armor, traditional to my
people. The acidic bile begins to sear into the armors paint
with a hiss of corroding paint. One from the mob starts to speak
‘tell us, who dares attack our master. We hate the silence, it
kills us’. I smirk from under my helm as I stop a few meters
from them ‘why should I, you’ll die before I finish’ with that
the group levels and cocks their auto rifles but I have already
fired another stream of flaming promethium mere feet in front of
them, setting the first ablaze. Without hesitation I jump
through the fire into the stunned heretics and begin what the
reavers are famous for, shock tactics.
The sun was beginning to set as the battalion of guardsmen
outside of the cathedral began to become as impatient as the
lord they were here to protect ‘Where is he!’ a short but chubby
man exclaimed as he emerged from his large, expensive looking
tent. A black armored marine from a group of the black and
purple clad reavers tower over him as he spoke down onto him ‘he
is taking care of your problem so I suggest you let us take care
of this’. The official snorted ‘do you know who I ‘am marine, I
‘am Carther odun. Official and soon to be new planetary governor
of this planet, and I say you should send more men into that
dammed cathedral and finish this now!’
The marine looks down and the feeling of unease grows among the
battalion. The marine calmly speaks but it has a ridged edge to
his tone ‘sergeant Antok will finish this by himself for to kill
daemons in the holy emperors name is a cleansing of past sins
and is a trial all captains must go through on their
coronation’. The governor simply sneers ‘what sin has he
committed than chaplain Ernac’ Ernac clenches his fist and the
governor finally stops gloating and starts to back away.
Before the governor can start to retreat into his tent the doors
to the cathedral are thrown open and a tall black and purple
armored figure emerges from the dark. Blood and black runic
symbols scowering his armor. The reavers assembled outside line
up ceremoniously in two columns facing Antok. Chanting for
blessings from the god emperor to watch over this ceremony.
Antok kneels as he holds up the head of the daemon, letting its
blood flow onto his helmet. The chaplain removes his gauntlet
and cuts into his palm and lets the his blood mix with the
daemons ‘we of the Reavers Hercules company call upon the god
emperor as our witness’ He raises his arms to the sky as the
marines kneel and stab their chainswords into the ground leaving
the imperial eagle pommel to rise above them in prayer.
Ernac placed his gauntlet back on with a hiss of compressed air
as he completed the ceremony “God emperor, watch over this and
see your work heading to its completion. See sergeant Antok rise
to become the new Capitan of the Reavers Hercules Company, watch
over him and guide his hand towards the fulfillment of your
word… Let our retired Capitan Frushian fight on in your name in
our last contemptor class dreadnought to smite all of humanities
enemy’s and traitors”. Ernac rests his black armored hands
gently on the purple and black helmet of Antok and removes it to
reveal the young but experienced features of Antok who stands
making the sign of the Aquila.
Ernac’s skull helm’s red lens glow intensifies as he nods to the
side and five servitors carrying tools and the traditional
company captains artificer armor emerge from the line up of
rhinos and kneeling marines. Antok holds out his arms and legs
as the scaffold for holding his armor parks behind him and the
servitors on thin mechanical legs start to unscrew and pack up
his armor leaving only his suit beneath and the second scaffold
is wheeled behind him, the artificer plate is then placed on
him. The armor is a physical story of the trials of a legend
from ancient terra, Hercules and the beasts he had slain, the
three hydra heads one for each knee and one for the groin plate
hissing and revealing their barbed fangs, the helm is a snarling
lion, the open jaws where the external vox sits. His right
shoulder pad the thick, furry heads of Cerberus, the three
headed guard dog of the underworld. The armor was forged from
not just cerimite but a mix of a rare mineral found only on the
chapters home world lighter, stronger and shock resistant it is
said that captains can wade through even missile fire. After the
armor was sealed the weaponry was finally given, a power sword
the blade was as black as the void with a stylized hilt of
burning daemons ending at the pommel where the flaming Aquila
sat.
Ernac knelt before the new Capitan with a small phalanx of the
honor guard of chaplains who echoed the binding words of Antok’s
rank “let it be known, imperial date 0.10M36 Brother Antok
ascends to captaincy of Hercules Company. Emperor watch over us”
The Capitan sheaths his sword and razes his hand for the company
to rise from the dirt ‘my brothers’ he projects as he walks to
the brick railing of the winding cobblestone path that carves
its way to the cathedral, littered with dead heretics. Antok
stares out into the city, burning ‘I believe our job here is
done. Its time to return home’ he ordered his men to load up
with a hand gesture and confidently waltzed to his Rhino leaving
the guardsmen to pick up the pieces after the devastating
assault on the heretics who once lived here.
Ernac stood with his other chaplains as the rest of the company
fell into line ‘are you sure he is the one Ernac?’ whispered one
‘yes I’am’ Ernac replies ‘I’am sure, for just look at how well
he went when he took over our company when Frushian was felled
by that Daemon prince. Sure he is hot headed and young but he is
the most tactically gifted in our company and we will need that
if we are to win this long war’ The others grunted in approval
‘let us hope he holds the faith like Frushian, we do not want
another Archaen incident’ the group grew dead silent as the made
of the sign of the Aquila leaving only one to speak up ‘yes,
never again’.
Tell me what you think of this little prelude to a little
experiment of mine, I plan to go into the religion of 40k and
its conflictions with other space marines.
