To sign the death warrant of a million men, a billion men, a
hundred billion men. To do so unquestioningly and with no doubt
that they all will die. That is the fear all inquisitors have.
Those doubtful of us, those distrustful of us for reasons absurd
or strictly logical, often come to think that we revel in
destroying a world entirely. Perhaps some of us do. But among my
peers, the men and women below me and myself, I know not one
soul who has felt the slightest joy in such a horrific action.
Although it is better for ten men to die than for one to bow to
a daemon, a man should never feel comfortable killing an
innocent.
And yet so often it must be done. For the Imperium to endure
sacrifices must be made, and occasionally there is no solution,
no other way of removing a problem, no way of even containing
it, slowing it, reasoning with it...
for these we employ weapons of eons passed, Cyclonic torpedoes,
Virus bombs, Plasma weaponry. Whatever card is picked, the end
result is the same: Exterminatus
For that is the duty of an inquisitor. To root out the threats
to man, and when the need is most dire, do what lesser men could
not.
And yet at some dark point in all their lives they sit back and
think about how many million have died by their hand. How many
innocents they slaughtered...
At one point in every inquisitors life, he begins to doubt. And
that is the first step on a road dark and terrible.
