The Fires of Fortune
By: Levi MacThomas Date: September 26, 2014, 6:00 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
It was a cold winter day, the snow fell softly on the mountain
tips as down a snow-lorn path marched out a being of grey and
black, his eyes amber and his paws buried with each step. Across
his shoulders sat a shoal of plaid- a green plaid. It offered
little protection from the snow of the mountain as he huffed and
puffed, a fire to the amber of his eyes. The snow gave way
softly to the dark lit night sky, full of stars.
The Old Wolf stopped and sat upon a rock, using a device to make
a fire. He warmed himself against the dancing flames, those
who's warmth caressed his body in the frigidity of the mountain.
He turned and pulled the shoal closer to his body, retrieving a
book. He took the pen between his fingers gently wrote into it.
"The mountain cries at night. I'm dying. I'll never make it off
this mountain. The king thought me too much a threat and has
trapped me. This shoal will never hold up to the cold,
unfortunately, and the trees are all too poor to make shelter.
It's important that my message be passed on to whoever may find
it. My name is Calden. I was a servant of the King, I learned
too late that he has decided to march against those of us with
Magic. As you can imagine, I ran from him. I got to the
mountain's threshold and over the top before a snowstorm set in.
I can see in the light of day the greens but my limbs are weak.
I can feel my sluggish blood pumping slower, and with everyone
step, this blizzard becomes worse. To whoever finds this be
warned: The King wants you to die, and I know that over this
mountain in the lands of Summer, that there lies magic like no
one knows. Run. Find shelter. Do something. But be warned...The
King is powerful. Save yourselves" he said, picking the book up
and looking down the edge.
A long way down, he could see green. But with tears in his eyes,
the old soul tossed his final warning over the edge, hoping that
someone would find it. He sat and drew his shoal closer as snow
began to envelope him, a triumphant gaze to his eyes as they
shut for one last time.
Across the Summerlands, a newborn wolf cried out. He writhed and
screamed at his new life. The Baby fought with all it's might.
His name was Eryn. The War would not come for 18 years, but when
it came, the communities of Magic fled and spread out. The War
turned to a war of attrition and desire to be free. And that is
where our story begins.
"Where ah ya takin' me?" Eryn asked to his friend.
"To see a scaly friend" The other replied. Eryn sighed and
pulled his plaid shoal closer over his shoulders as he
apprehensively looked at the cave before him.

Surel dipped his muzzle into his newest concoction, blowing
bubbles into it that quickly caused the glass jar around his
nose to shatter. He cursed, held his muzzle, and began writing
furiously onto a scroll on the table behind him. His cave was
riddled in bubbling potions and glowing liquids, some of them
with an ancient relic as a companion. The roof was covered in
clouds of various colors in lighter shades.

Eryn slid into the cave quietly, his paws making a slight
scratching sound at the sudden cursing.
"Hello? Amh just a wee deckhand and was told ya were friendly"
Eryn spoke out to Surel, glancing to his friend who now appeared
to have run away. Eryn looked less than amused at this
conclusion of events.

Surel glanced over at Eryn and flashed a smile before returning
manically to his studies. "I can be friendly, depends on who I'm
bein' friendly to." he gave a loud laugh and cut it short as he
dipped a twig into another mix, watching it dissolve into steam.

Eryn gave a half smile. Half "Come at me bro" and half "I don't
want to be here". A typical cocky smile for the young wolf.
"How bout' wolves? do ya like wolves any?"

"With a good dressing, yeah." he laughed even louder at his own
joke and set his quill on the table. The dragon sat in front of
Eryn, easily being four or five times the wolf's size. His
scales were a light green, as the leaves are when the sun hits
them in the afternoon, and his eyes were a vibrant purple,
rivaling even the most inviting of flowers. He wore brass
goggles on his forehead that looked like they were worn for ages
and the ages before then. His body movements were clearly
friendly, being married with his eyes.
He ruffled the wolf's fur and confirmed his behavior as a
friend. "Ah, I'm just kidding you, lil' son."

He looked around.
"An ere' ah thought ah was about to become a meal!" He laughed
at himself. The small wolf looked around, stretching as he did
so, tired from the journey.
"Where ahr ya from originally, ah don't see maneh dragons in tha
lowlands" Eryn asked.

The dragon licked his lips and scratched the back of his head,
looking a bit nervous. He got down low and looked left and
right, then behind the wolf as if to make sure no one was
following. "Ever heard of...The Mystlend?" he put on his
adventurous, mysterious voice.

"Nae, I haven't" Eryn responded.
"Ah was born ina small town east of ere', Inverness. Worked tha
dawks all mah life. Sailed ahn seen many a land. Never been to
the Mystlend though"

With kind eyes, the dragon looked up. "Mm, if you brought it up
to anyone but me, they would call ya crazy. Say it doesn't
exist." he got up and posed, trying to look dramatic. "But if it
did not exist, I would not be here, lil' son."
He glanced out the only window in his cave that allowed for
sunshine. "It's a pool. Just looks like water. In a cave, many
many miles from here. It...brings two places together, y'see.
Like...like a door." he smiled and then chuckled. "I fell in."
