       The Ventures’ Unsung Guitarists
By: abstamaria Date: June 7, 2013, 10:07 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
One of the greatest surprises to me was the fact that several of
the pieces that I thought were played by Bob or Nokie in the
early years were in fact by other musicians. In retrospect, I
should probably have known as the sounds and styles were so
different. The surprise (and disappointment) was that I didn’t
know until just the last five years.
Philosophically, I have accepted that I am not a fan of ALL the
Ventures pieces, as that would make me indiscriminating, what
with so many guitarists constituting the Ventures. Rather, I
have concluded I am a fan of several Ventures pieces, mostly
early ones, played by their lead guitarists, Bob Bogle, Nokie
Edwards, Billy Strange, and perhaps a few others.
On the basis of data from Del Halterman’s book and on the web,
it seems the following pieces were played by these unsung
guitarists. I am their fan, too, as I enjoyed their music.
       Bluer Than Blue: Tommy Alsup
       Hawaii Five-O: Tommy Tedesco
       Gandy Dancer: Billy Strange
       Guitar Twist: Tommy Alsup
       Gringo: Gene Moles
       Opus Twist: Tommy Alsup
       Out of Limits: Joe Saraceno
       Sunny River: Gene Moles
       Trambone: Billy Strange
       Wipe Out: Tommy Tedesco

The bulk of the 2-LP Only Hits LP and most tracks on the '78 TV
       Hits album were by others.

While this is all somewhat intresting, it doesn't really matter
       much.
We know "the boys" were certainly capable of playing nearly
anything and we've heard them play the following toons hundreds
of times. They did what that had to do to fulfill their
recording contact and probably felt lucky to have such a
       lucrative gig for the time.
       Hawaii Five-O
       Out of Limits
       Wipe Out
FTR (4 the record) I detested the Wipe Out version on the Let's
Go LP because I'm sure NONE of the boys played on it. OTOH, I
loved the Wipe Out on the On Stage LP, even tho we now no the
hole LP was recorded "live" in the studio. I don't
       care....twas/is still a great LP.
Nokie has recorded this w/us (many diffrent versions) and I'm
quite sure he could play anthing you "throw" at him...better
than you can ever imagine. I was blown away by his versions of
       Gringo...a li'l toon he rote w/Gene Moles.
       Gandy Dancer: (GWG recorded w/Nokie)
       Gringo: (GWG recorded w/Nokie)
       Sunny River: (GWG recorded w/Nokie)
If you want the best early 60's rendition of the Ventures, I
urge you to attend FanFest 2013. You'll be treated to "that
       sound" you're looking for.

I wish I could, Walt, but I live so far away! Perhaps, some
       day!
       Best regards,
       Andy

What's GWG? ??? Also, I always hated the Let's Go version of
       "Wipeout" myself.

Gandy Dancer, GWG stands for GUYS WITH GUITARS!
To the best of my knowledge, the band 'always'
       carried that name.
