If you don't like what's available I have a suggestion. Write
your own songs, and don't forget to figure out the chords, and
bassline and then write the charts out too.
It's easy, especially if you have some time on your hands.

Sadly, I have to say music's best days have come and gone. Even
new groups or artists that appeal to me are derivative, mining
old territory. Hey, there's only so much you can do with 12
       notes (microtones included). :(

For many years, it has occurred to me that while technology,
communication media, learning aids, and availability of and
access to inspirational types of music past and present, from
the whole world, have reached a peak today, the art of popular
song writing is nowhere near the high points and standards of
       the past century...
There are incredibly good and talented singers, musicians, gear,
recording equipment, all offering a range of opportunities for
great music...to a degree which couldn't be imagined a few years
       ago....and yet...it just isn't there..
New artists and bands etc pop up and are proclaimed as the new
Beatles or whoever, but they don't sustain, and their huge hits
and performances from even a few years ago seem soon
forgotten...will they create lasting classic music?
I don't know! But I suspect that we have passed a
musical/cultural peak in the 20th Century.

Not to mention WHO is buying all those geetars that Fender (and
       others) churn out?
We were 4chewnate to have lived during music's peek.

Has all of the best songs been writtend?
Sad to say we are stuck in a "Time Warp" and can't get out. The
same could be said for the music of the Big Band era including
Jazz and The Blues back to Bach & Beethoven & Brahms.
All music is homoginized and a derivative of what came before
it. You put it in a blender and change it accordingly. So be it
the evolution of the instruments played. If it hadn't been for
Rickenbacher inventing the pickup for the Hawiian lap top we
might all be playing lap tops and ukelele's instead of electric
guitars with synth sounds so we can imitate woodwinds, or
       orchestras of brass instruments.
Let's face it The Veneture's origianl "Walk Don't Run" is a
derivative and inspired by Chet Atkin's version of the same song
which was written & performed by Johnny Smith a Jazz guitarist.

I have to agree that we seem to be stuck. Once rock hit in '55,
it was hear to stay. Swing, jazz, country, and so many other
forms still exist but all the dominant stuff has some form of a
rock beat. I do like a number of relatively recent acts such as
Teenage Fanclub, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, Ben Folds and I
think they have a good degree of originality. Tame Impala is
great but very derivative of 60's psychedelia and that's
probably why I like them. So many others are very derivative.
