We get a nice Hanky sound with a $150 Line 6 Echo Park pedal.
It's all about HOW you adjust it. ;)

That's true Walt, but don't say that on the Shads forum- they
will chew you up! ::)

Bin there, dun that. ;)
I think the playing has something to do w/that as well.
Very few (if any) discussions about the bass PLAYING techniques
that have been used with Shads music.
It's almost always about the people and the fond memories.

Here's Hank Marvin demostrating what he used in the day to
create his special sound, and discussing what he uses these
days.

There's an interview somewhere or other in which Don Wilson said
his great palm-muting sound came from just using an original
tube VOX AC-30 with the reverb set on 8 or 9. I'll try to find
it and post it somewhere appropriate.

Hank was of course talking about Charlie Hall, who put together
programs for several off-the-shelf machines such as the Alesis
Q20, all with great success. He called his programs "Echoes of
the Past." Hank has been using the expensive TVS echoes lately.
These are especially made machines that replicate not only the
echo patterns, EQ, etc for EACH Shadows piece, but also the
warmth and tone of the tube Meazzis.
All this shows how much is known about the Shadows sound. The
resources are quite dry about the early Ventures.
Having said that, the Shadows sites are crammed with technical
information, techniques, history, gear. They are so incredibly
useful. In contrast, Undergroundfire tends to be more about
Ventures discography and current play schedules. There are some
very knowledgeable guys there though who sometimes contribute,
but the format just does not lend itself to someone studying a
particular Ventures sound.

One of the reasons this 4um was started was to accomplish a way
of organizing all of this great info. ;)

Jeff,
I just reread your post on this thread, which is very
informative and interesting, thank you for taking the time to
put it together.

You are very welcome Andy.
Over 50 years of the electric guitar instrumental experience
provides me decades of experimentation in the lab(on stage!)
Yes, it did take me a bit if time to collect and collate my
thoughts on the subject of "the" tone, and jot them down,
although I consider it time well spent if the effort proves
helpful to others to achieve their goals.
I hope you gleaned some helpful information from the article.
Jeff G.
