       Walk Don't Run Jazzmaster
By: abstamaria Date: January 25, 2012, 10:00 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here is a Fender Customshop Jazzmaster that I ordered in 2010
and received last year from Frank Glionna of Music Gallery in
Highland Park. It is supposed to be as close as possible to the
first Jazzmaster that Bob Bogle used, but with a flamed neck and
better finish and workmanship. After some discussion with Frank
and the Customshop, it was decided that Dennis Galuzska would be
the best master builder for the guitar.
According to Frank and Fender, this has the same neck as the
early 1960 Jazzmaster that was used with the Ventures
Jazzmaster. The neck for these did change in 1963. Fender uses
the 1962 year as a reference and sometimes calls this a “1962
neck.” Frank said “In 1963 the rosewood fingerboard became much
thinner. Prior to this Fender used a big slab of rosewood for
the fingerboard. It is referred to as a slab board. The
Ventures Jazzmaster had this slab board.”
It took seceral months for Dennis to make this "Walk don't Run"
Jazzmaster. This is the what Dennis & Frank named the guitar.
Its really cool. There is some beautiful flame maple on the
neck. Frank said “This should sound more like the 1960 Ventures
than they do now.” Well, the guitar probably would anyway.

I had posted this in the Shadows forums before, but thought it
would be good to post the picture here for posterity.

Thanks, Andy. Wow, I didn't think Fender was around in 1910.
Leo must've bin older than I thought! ;D
How much this set you back and how long to make it?
You have any recordings of you playin it?
       Inquiring minds wanna no.

Thanks, Walt. I corrected "1910" (now "2010")in my post, in
case people wonder. I have difficulty moving from the last
       millenium.
Fender has I think a standard charge for "masterbuilt" (and
also"team-built") guitars. This guitar is what they call "new
old stock,", which means it looks brand new. One has to be pay
extra to get it scratched up, faded, chipped, and rusty (a
"relic")! Another masterbuilder, John Cruz I think, is an expert
at relics, and one would use him if a relic were desired. I
wanted a guitar that looked like what I couldn't afford in 1960.
Also, the format of the shows we like to do - a
back-to-the-past show - calls for brand-new looking guitars.
It took over six months from the order to delivery. We worked
out the specs of the guitar beforehand, but it was relatively
easy in this case as we wanted a Jazzmaster as Bob Bogle might
have used. The difference will be the flamed neck.
Here is a close-up of the head. It is a very pretty guitar and
       plays wonderfully.

I haven't used the guitar on stage yet and have no clips on it
being played. It sounds much better than I do!
       Best,
       Andy

Headstock is gorgeous...is that gold tuners I see?
A friend of mine had a fiesta red strat (hank marvin)
       masterbuilt....was approx 5k.
       Todd Cruz built it.
Looking forward to hearing you play it.
Do you have any recent You Tube clips of you playing that you
could post for us in the Sound/Video files section?

The hardware isn’t gold-plated, Walt, as it is basically
1960-spec Jazzmaster as one might have bought then.

The neck is gorgeous, though, and probably would not have been
available where Bob Bogle first bought his.

The Stratocaster seems to have had a gold-hardware model on
their catalog in 1959, so Hank Marvin’s Strat has those on his
       first Fiesta-red guitar.
No videos since the last Madeleine Cookie Company show, I am
afraid. We'll try to do another show.
While the Shadows’ gear is documented in detail, down to the
strings and pick Hank Marvin used, there is very little
available on the Ventures’ guitars and amps, particularly in the
early pre-Mossrite years. This forum I hope will rectify this,
as there must be so much first-hand knowledge out there among
       Ventures fans.
       Best,
       Andy

So far, you've provided A LOT more info than we've ever had.
       Do you have a copy of Del's book...Walk Don't Run...the story of
       the Ventures.
It's the standard desktop reference for all things Ventures.

Beautiful Guitar, Andy! Not only is the flamed neck a beauty,
but I'm bedazzled by that vintage period Fender decal on the
       headstock.

Times like this I wished we all lived closer to each other to
share this kinda stuff. Thankfully we're at least able to share
       via internet. ;)

Wonderful guitar. Congratulations. Did anyone ever mention if it
was similar to the Jazzmaster that Don Wilson used for so long,
or maybe how it was different?
