“We’re proud to say that it sounds like a great unreleased 1965
Ventures album, and if you dig the 1960’s Ventures sound, you
       will love this new album”.
That is a bold statement to make but this is no throwaway line
because the album does in fact live up to expectations. Every
track is strong and the Ventures influence is heard throughout
with certain little touches that are familiar to the Ventures’
       own approach to music.
The man responsible for Venturesmania (not to mention the annual
Guitar Geek Festival and a whole bunch of other things) is Deke
Dickerson and he has got himself one hell of a band here. They
are a very adaptable unit with three guitarists in Deke, Garrett
Immel and Mel Bergman, all of whom are at ease on lead, rhythm
guitar or bass guitar and last and certainly not least, Chris
‘Sugarballs’ Sprague occupies the drum stool.
Nokie has guested with Venturesmania on ‘live’ dates a few times
so it was inevitable that a studio collaboration would happen at
some stage, and this little beauty is it.
Nokie is featured on 3 cuts and proves that he clearly has lost
none of his prowess on guitar. The catchy Gunfight at the Nokie
Corral has some neat touches from the man but is painfully too
short at just 1 min 32 secs, I was left in limbo wanting more of
       it.
The album is mostly original with one or two exceptions
including Geoff Goddard’s composition Johnny Remember Me, a
chart hit for John Leyton, and a fairly obscure Everly Brothers’
       song entitled Nancy’s Minuet.
Overall it is very well done indeed and so refreshing to hear
brand new material rather than re-treads of all the old stuff.
It is a well crafted collection of songs all wrapped in a
package that has all the info on who played on which track and I
for one look forward to more good things from Venturesmania.
In stock at Ventures International Review headquarters, just £12
       including postage, UK and overseas.
