At that summit, then-US President George Bush Sr. asked his
European allies if they wanted to continue in NATO .or they
preferred to build their own defense, in clear allusion to the
movements made by some States such as France and Italy, in favor
of creating an autonomous European defense. Unanimously and
without any objection, everyone accepted the continuity of NATO.

to this situation was the support that the United States had
given to the anti-communist regime of the Greek colonels, which
resulted in an island divided between two of its allies in
southern Europe.

"dictatorship of the colonels" and, enraged, decided to withdraw

Brussels decided to lift the arms embargo on Turkey. But the US
double game was evident again in 1980, when a military coup
d'état led by General Kenan Evren took place in Turkey, which
also received the support of Washington. In this whole matter,
the European member countries of NATOThey played a troupe role
in the American geostrategy, and allowed a permanent conflict to
settle on the island of Cyprus that was difficult to resolve and
has lasted to the present day.
