Sad Story

I really want to write a sad story. But I just cannot think up
an idea. I'll use my original characters. But I just don't have
any idea for plot or setting or what.. Help?

Idea List - it all depends on the characters, obviously, and the
setting
You could always go for a typical one character is bullied and
someone else finds out. Creative spins on this would be where
the bullying occurs, who the bully is and what it's over, and
how it's stopped. Maybe, if you really want to get involved, the
bully is being hurt by someone else and is just taking out
his/her stress?
Another idea - anything related to war. One character is drafted
and his/her family and/or friends find out. What are their
reactions? Does anyone go with the first character into battle?
Is it kept on the front lines or behind the scenes?
Final idea, until you look these over. Let's say, that someone's
boyfriend/girlfriend/fiancee is killed. Go deeper. The killer is
the first persons best friend. It was an accident, of course,
but still the fact remains. Write up the confrontation between
the two living characters.
