Does the NFL require teams to make injuries or absences public
during training camp? I dont get why PHI had to report Lane
Johnson missing practice to anyone other than the org. In fact,
I don't get why they have to report anyone missing practice at
all. Why is that anyones concern other than the org? I get the
"gambling" reasons during the season, but this isn't the season.
It's a week into camp. Why can't teams keep their injury
concerns to themselves. And why dont pro/NCAA athletes have
HIPAA rules apply to them in sports? It can't just be due to
gambling odds...or can it?

The gist of it is...
NFL teams are required to report injuries and practice
non-participation primarily to protect the integrity of the game
from gambling-related corruption and inside information. The NFL
injury disclosure policy dates back to 1947, when Commissioner
Bert Bell implemented it so that gamblers could not bribe team
personnel, scouts, or trainers to find out which star players
were hurt before the public did
While full, formal injury reports with official game statuses
(Questionable, Doubtful, Out) are strictly mandated on a weekly
basis during the regular season, transparency during training
camp serves several specific purposes:
Eliminating Inside Information
Maintaining Roster and Competitive Transparency
Media Access and League Rules
Competitive Fairness

Medical records maintained by a campus student health center or
athletic trainer employed directly by a school are usually
classified as education records under FERPA, not HIPAA-protected
health information.
