Two cable vandals arrested in Enugu

The Nigerian Securityand Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Enugu
has arrested two men for allegedvandalism of NITEL cables worth
millions of naira.
The suspects gave their names as Raymond Oji, 30, a driver who
hails from Delta and Emeka Dunu, 26, a hotel porter from Enugu
State.
Parading the suspects in Enugu on Thursday, the Corps
Commandant, Nathaniel Ubong, said the incident occurred at the
NITEL man-hole on Garden Avenue on July 17 at about 2 a.m.
Ubong said the suspects were arrested by the anti-vandals team
of the corps following a tip-off from concerned citizens.
He said the two suspects were arrested while the gang leader
whose name was simply given as Onyeka escaped.
“People should ensure the sustenance of government
infrastructure as they are for the benefit of all and
generations unborn.
“One of the suspects, Raymond Oji, was also involved in the
removal of railway equipment and PHCN facilities.
“Three other suspects are now in court for similar offences and
we will not restuntil vandals and criminals are flushed out of
Enugu,’’ hesaid.
Ubong said the suspects hadmade confessional statements that
would assist the command in its investigations, adding that they
would be charged to court when investigation is concluded.
The Area Head of NITEL Enugu Territorial Headquarters, Ikechukwu
Uwa, who confirmed the stolen items as NITEL property, said
vandalism wasaffecting its operations.
He said the theft of NITEL cable started two years ago, saying
that the cable with 1 200 pairs of copper wire inside it was
worth millions of naira.
In their statements, the suspects claimed that one Onyeka now at
large invited them to assist him in loadingthe cables.
Items recovered from them were a Golf car with registration
number BT 791 LSD, a generator, jacks, gloves, a sledge hammer,
spanners, pinches, hack-saw,pliers, screw-drivers and water
hose, among others.
