The Chief Judge of Ebonyi, Alloy Nwankwo, on Thursday discharged
nine awaiting trial inmates and granted bail to 23 others at the
       Abakaliki Prison.
The chief judge released the inmates during a jail delivery in
line with the powers granted him by the Prison Act, Cap 79 of
       1990.
He said the law empowered the CJN and CJs to move into any
prison within their jurisdiction and exercise their powers of
       discretion regarding criminal matters.
According to him, beneficiaries of the exercise were inmates
whose case files were either missing, denied justice or have
over-stayed their required jail term in prison.
Nwankwo pointed out that the exercise was not aimed at opening
prison gates for criminals to walk away as that could pose
       serious danger to the society.
“The exercise is only to give justice to those of you who may
have been wrongly denied this justice,’’ he said.
The chief judge advised the freed prisoners to be of good
behaviour and avoid acts that could bring them back to the
       prison.
Nwankwo also charged those granted bail to ensure that they did
       not contravene their bail conditions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the nine
discharged inmates were on awaiting trial for periods ranging
from three years to nine years for alleged theft, burglary,
assault and possession of fake naira notes.
The 23 inmates granted bail were awaiting trial for various
capital offences, including alleged cases of arson, rape and
       attempted murder.
