The image provided is the submission for the Haunted Hallway
Lighting/Texturing Project. A major, self-imposed aspect of the
piece was for the creation and use of hand-painted textures. In
the production process, effort was placed to create appearances,
figures, and patterns using at-home tablet and computer that
could not be created with conventional online textures.
Deep in the project, it became clear that because of the
decision to use hand-made textures, texture and image quality
was found to be less favorable than the use of online textures
that can be enhanced simply with the use of Photoshop. The
painted images of each object are only as good as the time and
painting skill put into it. As a result, the final product ends
up looking muddy and low quality in comparison to what is
       normally possible with photo-reference textures.
In studying professional hand-painted textures, texture artists
tend to follow specific rules and techniques. For instance, the
artist would decide on a limited balance from which to paint
each texture to give consitency and matching asthetic to each
texture of a scene. In the image, much time had to be devoted to
altering the colors of each texture after the fact to make all
aspects blend together. Solving this problem altogether in the
first phase would have saved large amounts of time that could
have been spent honing painting quality.
The normal hand-painted texture artist also tends to rely on at
least two aspects of painting, simplicity, and pleasing forms.
Hand-painted textures are often not as complex as real textures,
and rely on recognizable aspects associated with what the
material attempting to be conveyed is. Some hand-painted
textures are shaded and make effective use with only 2-3
differned levels of shading. Other art concepts such as
overlapping, shading, and the use of warm and cool colors to
make a painting pop out, are highly important to a quality
texture. In the image, much of the appearance of painting
quality is created through the use of a bump map, which creates
noticable appearance of depth. However, the physical flat
textures themselves are not as pleasing by themselves. Perhaps
an exercise could be to feed a texture into a bump and study how
the computer creates depth and attempt to recreate that look and
feel in the flat texture itself. In any case, more use of
painting techniques would help tremendously in creating the
sought-after, unique effect of hand-painted textures. Hopefully
for future projects, more attention and care can be given to
       these aspects.
Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy the piece.

I like the surrealist quality of the piece, but did you intend
for the light to not seem to come from any light source? I
mean, it could add to the surrealist quality, but it's kind of
confusing to me. Otherwise, pretty good. I liked the
       information about hand painted textures.

Micah, would you mind a re-upload of your piece on a website
that is not blocked on EVIT's iBoss filters? I would love to see
       your work!

KI, thank you for your feedback. The original purpose of the
lighting in the image was to emulate old horror film shots. In
general, many of the most powerful horror films use some
combination of primary or complementary colors to signify a
scene of either great importance or of supernatural nature. The
blue is meant to come from the outside windows and the red from
the vocal point underneath the stairs, and the green's purpose
is to balance the other two out. I do see what you mean in that
each color not having an explicit source is strange to the
viewer, since even in old horror films, even though logically it
makes no sense how some objects are illuminated, have an
apparent source to not distract from the main concept of the
shot. Thank you for the critique.
