The Ring in Progress
By: Raymond C. Date: October 31, 2016, 4:31 pm

I used a hammer, a spoon, a ring, a candle, a candle holder, a
bowl, and a mug. I also included a tavern background. I am
almost finished with the image, but I'd be glad to hear your
feedback. Let me know if something can be improved or changed.

There are two main problems with your still life, in my opinion.
The first is that the objects you put in have a different art
style, so the contrast with the background emphasizes your
objects, but creates a serious art style clash. It's like when
a background is projected behind a person from a green screen,
you can tell that from the real thing because of the light
difference between the background and the person. This prevents
the image from having unity. Another problem is that your
objects don't have shadows, which also is a huge reason why it
feels like the objects were just pasted in. This also messes
with the unity. In addition, your candle is too hard edged and
your hammer also seems to have have a lot of aliasing. However,
your composition and texturing looks fine to me. In short,
please try to make the objects fit more into the image.

I think the idea of a cartoonish background could be really cool
when done properly. I love the image you chose, as the art style
reminds me of Okami. It will be difficult to make something feel
unified with this clash of animation style, but I won't tell you
not to tackle the challenge. If you do keep the background, you
might want to consider re-positioning your objects on the table.
The camera is looking at the table at an angle from above, but
it's looking at the objects on it from the side, which makes it
look fake. Just a bit of rotation can go a long way!

Here is my second draft, I have done some of the changes that
have been advised. Is there anything I missed?

Consider re-positioning the ring, as well. It looks like it's
just floating there. Making it smaller would also probably be a
good idea, since not many rings are that big compared to the
other objects.

Ive made the ring and a few lines to show that the ring is being
launched from the spoon.

Maybe make the bowl a different color than the spoon. If you can
make the lines fade as they get farther from the ring, that'll
probably make it look better.
