I decided to play around with Maya some and came out with this
snow covered mountain range. Tell me what you think!

I think the first version is better, personally. The white
effect on the edited version sort of makes the water seem more
natural because of the white hazy effect at the bottom, but the
really bright mountains kinda get lost I guess. In the above
one, the water feels less merged as well with the mountains. If
that makes sense? But because of the dark blue water, those
bright mountains pop out and look really nice.
Maybe make the mountains a bit darker, i'd suggest. Good job,
       though overall.

Or as an alternative, I just thought of this, you could use less
of that white hazy effect. Hopefully you know what I mean, I'm
       terrible at explaining things. Sorry.

I understand what you mean, the [glow=white,2,300]white
hazy[/glow] effect was a mixture of volumetric fog and some
cloud dynamics. I do agree that the fog was too much, but i
couldn't seem to find the nice mix between too much and too
little. I also do agree I could have turned the general
       brightness down a bit too.

       That's pretty great!
I gotta ask, how did you get the snow to only apply onto the top
of the mesh, not the steep sides?

There is actually a snow node inside the hyper-shade editor that
i mixed with a blend colors node to add my rock textures. With a
little fidgeting of the settings I got it to have that look.

Hey I'm a big fan of what you've done here. I think your render
of the final product could be improved however, try playing
around with mental ray with a physical sun and sky.

Thanks for the feedback! I initially wanted to render with
physical sun and sky, but I just wasn't happy with the results.
I spent hours tweaking the settings and messing around with
lighting but I just couldn't find a happy median. I plan to mess
around with it a little more once I get a better PC, as adding a
physical sun and sky dramatically increases render time (It
takes 5 minutes just to IPR render a section of a 640x480 rez).
This scene is also extremely high poly at a whopping 301k
       polygons in all.
Here are two renders with physical sun and sky. As you can see,
       they're not as good.
