       rigging problem

So, when I put points on my character to begin rigging, they
kind of snap to certain areas, instead of being able to be moved
freely. I'm not sure what's wrong. The computers in class seem
fine, but when i went to work on the tutorial at home, the joint
tool sort of snaps to certain places, and I can't make it look
like the tutorial. I want to actually make progress, but things
like this keep happening when I go to work on things at home and
       it's very frustrating.

also, if this helps, when i went to begin working on the
tutorials at home, I noticed that when I began to use the joint
tool, the settings were different from the ones at school. What
would happen is when I went to place a point, it would be this
huge circle, and when I went to place another, this huge
triangle would show up. I had to go into the settings myself and
change that to look like the tutorial. But I'm not sure how to
       fix this.

Are you using Maya 2014 and 2016?
As in, 2014 at school and 2016 at home?
Or the other way around possibly.

Maya 2014 at home. I'm not sure what's up. One other thing I
noticed is when I was working on my character modelling at home,
I would create a cube and the cube would have it's subdivisions
at 2 automatically, but when I made a cube using the school
computer they were automatically at one. Just little stuff, but
it so happens to be messing with me, now.
I'm not sure if it's something i did. Until today I haven't ever
touched the rigging tool at all on this computer.

Oh, and I'm sorry, forgot to mention, i think all the school
computers use maya 2014 as well.

       Make sure these are unchecked.

As for the subdivisions thing, go to Create>Polygon
       Primitives>Cube option box
