Marks caused by caning

One of the problems for many is the marking that can be caused
by caning. Some regards all this as "trophies" a bit like war
wounds but for others marking is a problem. Switches are often
worried about being marked as the next clients might be put off.

Some people mark much more easily than others and experts say
that a guarantee of no marking is very difficult unless the
level of play is reduced to tapping with the cane. Custom
appears to be everything and even people who mark easily can
have their skin made more resilient by regular use or
application of the cane. The warm up seems to be essential in
order to get the blood flowing.
There appears to be a debate over arnica and Lady P. suggests
(see thread) not using this over open wounds - others say it can
be used internally prior to being spanked but with possible side
effects - does anyone know what they might be.
What about witch hazel as I have heard this mentioned as being
useful?
Finally, a Manchester based domme states on her web site that
she can deliver severe canings without marking due to the magic
of the cold, wet towel. How does this work? Is the towel
applied immediately afterwards or is caning done through the
towel itself?
Marking can be an inconvenience so any thoughts/advice as to how
to minimise it or deal with it would be useful, I think.
Bruising is said to be more likely as a result of those thick
diameter canes that cause a dull thud - the more swishy type
canes might produce wheal or welts but in general, these are
likely to disappear more quickly. Does anyone know how this so
called magic cold wet towel works?

Arnica cream side effects are contact dermatitis.
Internally, arnica extracts are extremely toxic. Side effects
include dizziness, tremors, irritation of mucous membranes,
muscle weakness, an increase risk of bleeding, vomiting and
heart irregularities. It can also cause stomach discomfort and
nausea, damage to the liver and kidneys and organ failure.
Arnica creams contain very small amounts of arnica and therefore
do not usually exhibit such side effects. However, if used on an
open wound, Arnica can enter the bloodstream, causing the same
effects as when taken internally. Large doses of arnica taken
internally can be fatal.
Arnica slows the process of blood coagulation. Therefore, if
taken with other anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, such as
Warfarin, Hepadrin, Plavix or Coumadin, arnica can cause
increased bleeding. In addition to prescription medications,
arnica can also interact with over-the-counter pain relievers
and herbal remedies that affect blood coagulation, including
aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, garlic or gingko biloba.
Arnica can also reduce the effectiveness of corticosteroids, as
well as drugs that treat high blood pressure or diabetes.

Blimey! The side effects from arnica sound really bad
potentially at least and not worth the risk - better to go with
the marks, I reckon.
Is Witch Hazel safer?
What about this cold wet towel business? Does anyone know how
this works?
Thanks for the info on Arnica - I never realised it was that
bad! :o

Side Effects
In some studies, drinking a excess quantity of tea made from
bark, leaves, or twigs has lead to nausea and vomiting. It can
also result constipation.
Using witch hazel orally is not prescribed because its tannin
content may lead to kidney or liver damage.
Using more than 1 gm of witch hazel orally may lead to vomiting
, constipation,& upset stomach.
Tell your doctor promptly if you feel any of these highly
unlikely but very serious side effects:
•Stomach pain.
•Yellowing eyes or skin.
•Dark urine.
•Severe tiredness.
•Loss of appetite.
•Nausea.
•Vomiting.
•Light-colored bowel movements.
•Trouble urinating.

Mistress Nyx. Manchester pro domme and a few others mention it -

Interesting post, and Krystal you seem to have a doctorate in
medicine with your knowledge of side effects :)
I always play relatively gently (because I like sting rather
than hurt), being brown skinned I don’t think I mark that easily
though!

Google is my medical dictionary Curious ::). I am a big google
fan now I can control my health anxiety, I used to use it for
self diagnosing. Sometimes it would decide I was having a stroke
:-\ (lol sorry, thought this smiley represented a stroke) ,
seizure or whatever and sometimes it would decide I was simply
suffering from a water infection.
