„Incessant bloviating by a certain guy from California“? Well, I
don‘t know who you could be talking about Jerry.
But in any event, we are pledging to keep politics off the board
since the consensus desires that, as do I (maybe this is why
Italki banned it anyway). I went for 8 years under Obama and
never paid any attention to politics but, unfortunately, over
the last 3 years that‘s all we hear about. You really can‘t turn
your computer on any time of the day or night and not hear about
this kind of junk on Yahoo News, and every podcast on YouTube.
It really gets very annoying. You actually have to work hard to
avoid it all.
But, there are a lot of good things we can talk about, like
movies maybe? We can talk about languages-German of course being
a suggestion, but it can be any. ;)
One of my favorite hobbies was genealogy, about 20 years ago. I
kind of gave up on it, and went onto other things because I
discovered that the only people even remotely interested in it
might be your own family. And even they don‘t care all that much
about it anyway. It‘s kind of fun because you might find out you
are a distant relative of a king or queen someplace. I had a lot
of fun last night because, for the first time, I discovered I
had a great great grandfather on my mom‘s side who was the mayor
in the 1830s of a town in Northern Germany, which is my favorite
town of all, Jever, in Ostfriesland. It‘s kind of fun to know I
have a relative who was long ago the mayor of this town I visit
each year. One thing I did notice was that most people didn‘t
live long back in those days. Men living to 55 was pretty
typical. If you got to 60 I guess you were considered lucky.
Women dying sometimes in their 40s was shocking. It was
probably a hard life they had, riding horses everywhere, and
buggies. It took all day to go just 10 miles.
Before everyone starts nodding off to sleep, think about how
hard life must have been in the 1830s. No electricity, no indoor
plumbing, no hot showers, no air conditioning, minimal heating.
And talk about healthcare. What healthcare? You were pretty much
on your own in those days. You either made it or you didn‘t.
But, I‘m behind Neal on this one. So, someone throw out a topic
and we‘ll see where it goes.

Terecia,
I certainly wouldn’t worry about offending anyone. You certainly
have never done that, and I don‘t think anyone here at the
moment has done that. We all apply a measure of restraint in
what we say, in a certain way. Do you know the expression, „Even
a dog knows the difference between being stumbled over and
kicked“? It‘s sort of like that. We might occasionally stumble
around, but no one here is doing any kicking.

Danke je, SHL, for the confirmation. And, thanks also for
the next expression :).

I'm not sure what you all are talking about. All my American
friends are good people.

Oh, I got it. It's about the new administrator, the old topic.
It has continued. ok, understood.
I think Americans are good people and they love beating each
other in the political discussion. That's why their voice is
often loud and their music is cheerful to encourage stronger
ideas in the discussion. Then they take a rest for a chance,
listening to songs of John Denver. They keep good balance. I
like those people.

Frankly, I do not want the many members who live outside the US
thinking that the forum in entirely in the hands of some half
crazed, Trump loving, politics arguing, evangelical preaching,
American.
What's wrong with this Neal? We have an at least half-crazed
atheist, politics-arguing socialist commenting regularly. I know
he's not an Administrator, all we're doing is giving some
reasoned balance. ;)
Then, I thought this comment made me laugh. I wanted to rate the
FUNNY. I am an atheist too, a kind of. I don't know about the
politics that much, but I like to see what US is doing. I'm
reading the magazine Newsweek that is translated into Japanese
to catch up with you, Americans. I like those topics.
