What Was Your Most Interesting Travel Experience?
By: Terecia Date: April 10, 2019, 11:13 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I didn't travel a lot. The only chances I got is when I
studied abroad. Here is my story:

Kashgar, the westernmost city in China is a totally
different atmosphere from the coastal area. The locals, namely
Uighur, are a Turkish ethnic group. They believe in the Muslim
Allah.
I had a chance to go there with a good companion. Wearing
hijabs, long sleeves, and trousers, we tried to blend into the
crowd. Nevertheless, the locals could identify me as a tourist,
while they thought my friend was my tour guide. What an
interesting role we played.
The weather wasn't too hot and dry, thanks to the marvelous
month of May.
Mutton kebabs, naan (a leavened, oven-baked flatbread),
pilaf, yogurt, and herb tea gave us unceasing energy and spirit
for a couple of days. I disliked the smell nor the taste of
mutton before, but miraculously I fell in love with the kebabs
which were made by the passionate sellers and with the little
help of cumin. How I love the smell of it!
The Id Kah Mosque is the largest mosque in China. Its
architecture looked so grand yet solemn. It was unfortunate that
we couldn't manage to get into the mosque. Otherwise, it would
have been an amazing experience and remain in my memory forever.
The Old City of Kashgar was almost untouched by modern
civilization. I fell in love with the locals. They were nice and
friendly, especially old people and children. They smiled from
ear to ear only to find out that I come from the biggest Muslim
country in the world.
Last but not least, the hustling and bustling of Sunday
Market, where we craved after the dazzling clothes, handicrafts,
carpets and ate the authentic delicacies.

The only thing I regret is I broke my camera. I lost the
pictures. So, pardon me for unable to display the real
picturesque scenes.

I love it, it won't get soggy since the weather was so dry (I
came from a tropical country where baked food could go soggy in
a couple of hours)

This kind of Hijab style that I wore (a bit different from the
Indonesian Hijab style)
I hope you enjoy the story and the pictures as well.

Beautiful pictures Terecia. Thank you. I traveled to Kashgar and
other cities on the Silk Road in the past.
I do not know when you went there. However I read that the old
city of Kashgar has been destroyed to quite an impressive extent
for political reason, as a punishment. The whole region of
Xinjiang is occupied and colonized by the Chinese Han who try to
oppress brutally any willingness of the Ouighour Muslim
community for independence.
Sorry to tell that. But we are not on Italki anymore.

Terecia, those are good pictures. Thanks for posting them. I do
have one question. You captioned one picture "I still have the
hat." Did you bring the man back home and got rid of him but
kept the hat? Or did he give you the hat? :D

It doesn't look like China. They are not Han Chinese. That's
the problem for China.
As Σοφία wrote, China destroyed many
mosques again recently. They prohibit Islam strictly. I wrote
about it on the other thread.
You were very lucky to go there before the tragedy, Terecia.

Indeed it doesn’t look like China, but anyway China has several
ethnic minorities. The Ouighour are the biggest one with 23
milion people.
On the link you published Chizuko I found another small article
about the repression by the Chinese central government of the
Ouighours in the Xinjiang region. They even oblige the men to
cut their beards and ban the Hijab for women.

Yeah, Chinese Communist party has become cruel. They expand
their economic territory to Europe. It is called One Belt One
Road Initiative. Italy agrees with it and going to support the
plan even though many people domestic disagree. I read that the
east area in Germany already has train lines from China and
import and export a lot of products like cars and electrical
goods.
For me, China looks hurry to control inside and outside. They
look to be afraid of being smashed by someones, the biggest
powerful group that changes the world. Something might happen in
a few years.
I will never be able to write this on italki.

Terecia, I'm sorry that I didn't write about traveling. EGP
members love talking about the controversial issue. Please turn
a blind eye to it.

events make a repeat trip impossible.

They are not The Chinese Han. Their food is exactly Turkish that
I want to try. What language do they speak? Chinese? I found the
Youtube video. The town was in 2015. You can see two languages
on the singes. The travelers speak Chinese.

Chinese plan, One Belt One Road Initiative has started since
2015 here Terecia visited. In the video, it's called Silk Road
economic belt.
