       Who's worse than China?
By: Nikola Date: April 5, 2019, 2:10 pm

A country that brown noses China. Meet the Czech Republic.
  HTML https://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/pressure-mounts-for-czech-trade-minister-to-resign-over-china-taiwan-diplomatic-incident
It has become an increasing trend in the past years, it's
regretful and embarrassing and hopefully it will change.
Nevertheless, the representative of Taiwan was forced to leave a
diplomatic meeting held at our Ministry of Trade and Industry,
upon the Chinese ambassador's request. A similar request was
made during another meeting four months back but that time, the
Prague Mayor made it very clear that China had no right to
dictate who is allowed to attend the meeting and who isn't.
Sadly, we're back to being obsequious now.

I have to say, Nikola, you have a better English vocabulary than
I do. I had to look up „obsequious“ in my German dictionary,
dict.cc. So, it‘s unterwürfig, servil. That‘s makes sense. You
know how the mainland Chinese government is about Taiwan. Don‘t
they still consider it a wayward colony or something?
Thank goodness they‘ve got water between them. (Watch Jerry and
Neal say they knew what obsequious was all along and I was the
only guy who had to look it up.) ;)

I don't know about Jerry and Neal but Kseniia probably knows it
       :)
I remember the first time I heard the word "obsequious". It came
up in a conversation with a native speaker, which puts it in the
priority category in my head (the "native speakers use it and
expect me to know it" category). The person who used it was
British. You might like the story, actually. They're a
British-American couple and I was helping them with the cover
letter for their Czech Citizenship application. Guess what, they
don't like Trump :) We were discussing just how obsequious their
       letter should be.

In French obséquieux is quite a frequently used word. I mean,
among people who still read books and newspapers and value
       language.

Yes. I know the word and have used it on occasion. It's not a
word one uses everyday. I'm especially careful to not use it
around lawyers. We all know their lexicon is horribly deficient.

Who likes Trump? No one I`ve ever met. Go into my town and have
a sandwich and all you hear are the latest Trump stories and how
bad he is and how can we run a good Democratic candidate to win
in 2020. No one on the west coast of the US likes Trump. It`s
just redneck ignorant middle America, from places you’d never
       want to go to anyway.
Yeah, I never heard „obsequious“ in my life and had no ideas
what it meant. This points to the risk of using words that are
tagged „geh“, gehobener Sprachstil, in German, elevated
language, until you verify with native speakers that they know
those words, because they often don`t. If you stick with the
Standard language or go down to colloquial words or lower
(except for slang) you are always safe. General rule: you can
always go down in the quality of your vocabulary, but use
extreme caution going up, because 1) the word isn`t always
understood amongst the native speakers and/ or 2) you risk being
flagged a foreigner by using some strange word native speakers
       have never heard of.

Oh just listen to Jerry. How predicable. No one in Indiana uses
„obsequious“ because definitely no one back in that State would
understand that word. It`s way too backward for big words like
that. Maybe a Professor at UC Berkeley or Harvard might know it,
but not some corn husker from Kansan or hoosier. Imagine the
looks you`d get if you used that word in Indiana? People would
just stare at you say ask „what‘s THAT?????“

I know that word. I read it in a book describing the terror of
the police state and the fear of being reported on by your
friends and neighbors in the old DDR. Fear made the people
       obsequious.
it isn't as bad as that word kseniia had about sexual relations
among one celled organisms, but its use is pretty rare. Except
       in books.

I can‘t imagine what book that would be you‘d be reading about
       the old DDR.
