Come to think of it, maybe it's withdrawal syndrome? The church
not having burnt anyone for a while now?

Ah! So it's pyromania! Good call, Alharacas!
Reminds me: 20-something years ago, a boy-pyromaniac burned down
my uncle's car. True story. The kid was ten or so. Anyway, I
guess these fellas in black outfits would understand.

"Let's burn some shit."
"You don't even know how to start a fire."
"I do. Father Stanislaw taught me when we went camping."
"No way."
"Wanna bet?"
"We don't even have anything to burn."
"I happen to have the key to Sister Agnieszka's lost and found
chamber."
"What's in there?"
"Just books, umbrellas, all sorts of crap. No one will miss
them."
"We should make a prank out of it and post something on
Facebook."
"You're a genius."

I don‘t know of any bad kitties you‘re talking about, but these
are the only bad kitties, I know of. Icelandic Viking kitties
who have to grow their fur long for the cold and wear helmuts:

As a Polish catholic I can only say: Thanks God not all of them
(priests) and us (members) do such things. I've done a quick
research to find out what did bishops and other opinion forming
priest say about this... 'event'. I was happy to see that all
the opinions I found were strongly against burning books and
especially against burning signs of other religions which we are
supposed to respect. Some of the priests tried to defend those
'burners' a little bit calling this situation 'unfortunate' and
saying that there are things or books which sometimes attract us
to ideas that can be potentially harmful to our spiritual
stability... and decision to choose this or other things
belonged to the people who brought them to the church. But most
of the priests called this incident harmful for the church and
the way people see it.
Of course I can see and hear many extreme opinions in the church
nowadays. I happened to view several interesting videos (on the
Youtube) done by priests, monks and ordinary people, where many
aspects of spritual and ordinary life had been explained as the
people of the church see them. These opinions excluded each
other in many cases and the comments on them I could read on
Youtube were often full of fanaticism, accusing the others of
blasphemy and heresy. I was wandering did they forget that a
Christian should restrain from judging the others and approach
with LOVE to other people... Sad...
These things are the reaction of even more people leaving the
Churches (not only Catholics) and losing their faith. The
priests and members of religious groups can react to this in
many ways. Most common thing is doing nothing and waiting what
happens. I can see a lot of young people staying in front of the
church while they are supposed to be inside - they came to get
the signature in their book, because it's needed to have a
confirmation sacrament. But they are outside, chatting with
friends. Why? Inside of the church we may find a praying priests
and elderly women reading religious texts with trembling voices.
Is it attractive to young people?
Some of the priests are trying to do their best. They are open
to young people. Explain them things they will be able to make
use of in their future life, families. Don't threaten them with
the hell, rather explain the possible life threats of things
called 'sins' by the Bible. But of course there is another group
of priests and normal people who see the possible cure for the
church in returning to old customs, old liturgy, censorship,
closing the communities (making them hermetic). It's not typical
for Poland, though maybe it's clearly seen here because of our
traditional attachment to the Catholic Church. But you can see
it in general - just take a look what do people say about the
current pope Francis - accuse him of blasphemy and heresy, being
against all possible reforms he has in mind.
And the book burning thing... In the video material connected to
the article cited there was an information that Harry Potter
books has been burnt in public in the United States at least six
times so far...I couldn't see all the video material because
part of it is blocked for the viewers in my country (by whom
and why?). Some people believe in everything they read and see.
I hope that books classified as fiction are treated as an
entertainment for most (at least adult) people. In case of
children their parents should decide and make sure 'But you know
it's only fiction? Don't you?'. But maybe these priests-burners
had different experience. Maybe they met people who really
believe in wizards among us or in vampires after reading the
book or watching the movie?. This is an overprotective way of
thinking, often seen tn the Church in past ages and to some
extent now (like in the anti-contraception theories). Some
priests say it's safer not to read or watch something than to
have doubts. A few months ago there was a movie in cinemas in
Poland. It was about a group of priests having women, abusing
children, drinking too much alcohol, demanding money from their
parishioners, and being generally nonpunishable. Some priests
and organizations within the CC protested against even showing
it, some even said it's a sin to see this movie (!). I have seen
a video with a priest who said that everyone should decide, but
people who are unsure shouldn't see it because seeing the
pathology may induce doubts in them and they may loose their
faith. In another video a monk said that he went to see the
movie with a few of his brothers from the monastery, and he
thinks that every priest should see the movie to take a look at
their life and see if they not going that direction (of the
priests portrayed in the movie). So there are different
approaches as you see.
And this poor 'Hello Kitty'... I was surprised... but I manged
to find some gossips (widespread by whom?) about possible
'devilish' origins of this trademark. It's not worth mentioning
here so I will not. Probably someone has created the fake-story
to increase the interest in product selling... maybe those
umbrella-people ;-)
