The thing about that rail line that has always bugged me -- who
the hell travels from LA to San Francisco? We are not talking
New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC. There
is already a ton of traffic on that rail line, as well as all
sorts of shuttle flights. The majority of traffic on California
Freeways is local commuter, who would this railway serve? They
certainly wont let trucks/freight on it.
But then that is just like California government, and our
government in general. Not an ounce of business sense among the
       lot of them.

Good point. I don`t think I`d be taking any trains down there.
       Thatīs 400 miles. I`ve driven it and itīs a pain. 6 1/2 or 7
hours of sheer boredom and no scenary, straight down the State
and flat as a billiard board. Much easier to fly. Southwest is
only a bit over an hour. Who would want to sit on a train for
who knows how many hours? And then have nothing to look at
       anyway?

I did enjoy that trip on Route One, we took it right by the
coast from San Francisco all the way down to San Diego. We took
Rt 5 up, which is boring and flat, but Rt 1 had some beautiful
views. It was vacation driving, stopping wherever we wanted and
we were young so cheap hotels were fine. You wouldn't use rt 1
if you were in a hurry.

Oh the Coast Highwas (Highway 1) is beautiful but very windy and
takes forever to go anywhere on. It will make you dizzy and a
bit paranoid driving it north from San Francisco. For several
miles it`s just switchbacks and ups and downs but it is
beautiful because it tracks the Pacific Ocean the whole way.
But you can`t really watch the scenery as a driver, since the
road in so many places is dangerous and you quickly learn itīs
not safe to take your eyes off the road for a minute.
