Terecia-- although SHL doesn´t recommend the site as a good
place to post on, I agree with Alaharcas that sometimes it is
the best place to find discussions about what to me can be
¨little known details¨ about English words and grammar. When I
am unsure about something in English, I tend to do a search
about it, and it is often a discussion on stackexchange which
sheds some light on it. I am like SHL though, that I would not
expect to be welcome there because they seem to be very formal.

       @Susan
That's exactly how I feel. The atmosphere is too cold over
there, it's even worse than my English class.

       Terecia,
Yes, everyone should try out any of those sites, just to see
what they are like and if they are what you are looking for. You
have to remember that all the stackexchange sites are just
user-contributed, so they may contain correct or not-so-correct
information. I‘d say as a general rule they are pretty good at
conveying fairly good information, especially if the questions
       are fairly basic.
At the same time, they are not places to go to find internet
friends. While they might fall under the general definition of
social media, they are not frequented by people who are terribly
welcoming or social. I think it was Susan who said they are
rather formal, or something. That‘s a good way to put it. In
approaching learning languages, the process should be both
informative and fun, and not terribly uptight. Some people think
they can teach foreign languages like one would teach chemistry
or biology, and that approach, I think, just turns people off
       pretty fast.

wordreference.com is great for looking up technical terms
(there's usually a link to the discussions related to the term,
even if it's not in the dictionary), and the members are very
helpful when you can't come to grips with a particularly
convoluted sentence structure or really old-fashioned language,
       obsolete idioms, etc.
While I was reading a 15th century Spanish chronicle, some
lovely guy helped me a lot. And if I had to translate - heaven
forbid! - an instruction manual, this is definitely the site I'd
       turn to for reliable information.
I always had the impression it was mostly for people
encountering specific problems in a language they're already
fluent in, such as translators, scientists or journalists.
However, maybe it's only like that on the Spanish, English and
German forums (within wordreference.com), and perhaps learners
are made more welcome on the other forums. :)
